Alternate to wedding cake at brunch reception

My fiancé and I are planning on a mid-morning wedding (10:30) and  a brunch reception (eggs, pancakes, fruit, pastries, etc.) to follow. Neither of us are fans of cake or cupcakes and I am having troubles coming up with ideas for an appropriate "replacement" for the wedding cake to fit in with the menu. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Your wedding sounds awesome.   If you don't want cakes how about a chocolate fountain, pie, candy bar, ice cream sundae bar, or cheese board?

  • Oh, there's lots of things!

I tend to think of fruit desserts during the day - chocolate fountain with fresh fruit and cookie dippers, fruit cobber or crisp with ice cream, fruit tarts.  Any kind of pie, fruit or not.

Ice cream sundae bar, frozen yogurt bar, ice cream truck treats.

Viennese table - lots of small bites of sweets like cookies, mini tarts, truffles, pastries, mini cups of chocolate mousse, mini parfaits, cupcake bites, cake pops.

    Cheesecake.
  • What about a selection of muffins? You could arrange hem in a tower like you would cupcakes.

Well, supposing that you did a variety of finger pastries?

There are so many things you can do-brownies, mini-cheesecakes, mini-pies, lemon or lime squares, tarts, truffles, petit fours, and so on.  Also, you can do ice cream, sundaes, regular size cheesecakes or pies, mousses, compotes, candy, and other things as well.
  • i'd say awesome belgium waffle and fruit and whipped creme stacked to look like a cake! :) i love waffles.
  • Crepes, waffles, french toast, bread pudding, mousse, creme brulee, pie, cobbler, cheesecake, cookies..really it's whatever you want.
  • My vote is for crepes!
  • I've heard of doing a "tower" of doughnuts & PP muffin idea would work, too.   I've also read about a couple who really, really, really loved Cinnabon cinnamon buns, so they contacted the company to find out if they could get a tiered "cake" made out of giant cinnabons.  According to the account, the company was so flattered that they donated the "cake."

Obviously that's not going to work for more than one couple (getting a free ginormous tiered cinnabon), but you could certainly use the idea and talk to a local pastry shop about putting together a sticky bun/roll "tower" -- you could even have some flavor variations (cinnamon buns, orange rolls, pecan buns, apple fritters, etc.).

And there's always coffee cake.  I would think that if you wanted, a bakery could make you a tiered one (square or round) to mimic a standard wedding cake (just with a streusel-crumb layer on top instead of being covered with frosting).
