What can I expect to pay for cake per slice?  I am in the Midwest in a not huge city.  I really have no idea what to expect as far as wedding cake prices, and since it seems most people quote price/slice I am really thown off.  Hearing that cake is $2.40/slice means very little to me because I don't know if this is high or fair or what.

It doesn't matter what people in Portland or Phoenix pay per slice.  What matters is what is the going rate in your city.  You have to call around to bakeries and get their prices, then you'll know if you are getting a good price for your location.  You might ask on your local board, they will have a better idea of prices in your city.

Hmmm... I haven't solidified my cake decorator yet, but I'm in Omaha as well.

There are some options.  If you're not picky on cake and don't need a lot of unique specialization, you can go to a grocery store or Wal-mart and get a decent cake for a dollar a slice or less (Wal-mart 2 tier starts at $48, serving up to 64).  It is of note that if you go this route, every store has different talents when it comes to decorators.  There are some grocery stores/WMs that have great decorators, and some that have less than stellar.  Also, you generally don't have a lot of flavor choices.

On the flip side, you can easily get a price above $6 per piece, or higher, if you go with filling and fondant and the whole shebang.

As a whole, if you're not going the super-cheap route, it's looking like about $2-4 per slice seems to be the the norm for an average wedding cake.  For what it's worth, I'm budgetting about 300 dollars for about 125 people and I don't think I'll have much problem finding something (it helps though that I don't like fondant and don't need gumpaste flowers and the like).

We are not particular about frosting.  Butter cream is fine.  I will need to look into sugar free and possibly gluten free cake.  It seems that most places we have looked are charging right around $2.00 a piece.
