Help- Invitations!

We are now starting our search for invitations! Soooo, I was wondering where y'all got your invitations, if you were happy with them, places you know of, etc.?

I have been looking online and they seem to be a lot cheaper than print shops or stationary places but I'm kind of nervous about ordering invites online. I know on a lot of them you can order samples and we have gotten 2 samples and they were both very cheaply and poorly made.

Our budget for invitations is about $500.00 and we need about 225 invites if that helps any. So, if you have any suggestions, let me know! Thanks!

I'm actually considering ordering ours through David's Bridal's Invitations... sounds odd, but we got some samples in last week, and I really like to quality.  We are ordering 100 for $60 (without the RSVP card... buying those on top of the price).  All in all, the price will be right at $120 for 100 invites, envelopes and RSVP cards!

We just bought our invites at hobby lobby, and my mom did all the printing herself at home with their fancy printer or whatever they have. I don't know, she just got it recently.

The invitations came out really cute, and we got a lot of compliments on them. Everyone was astonished when they asked where I got them done, and I said "My mom did them at home!"

Invites don't have to be uber expensive unless you make them that way!

Natalie: We have looked at Michaels and Hobby Lobby I just don't know if we have the supplies to pull it off. I am just not very DIY-ish.

I am really obsessed with invites with a ribbon on them and layers so both of those things make them a little pricier!

I had my mom add a ribbon on the inside :)

I can see if I can get a picture of our invites. I don't know what you mean by "layers"...but I'm sure it's do-able. But you're right, if you're not a DIY-er, then you'll have to go the more expensive route. I'm not a DIY-er either. AT ALL. Luckily, my mom is!

We used someone on Etsy... our invites were 1.25 each, plus .60 cents for the RSVP. Remember to order extra invitations and envelopes to account for errors ones that get returned.

I used Etsy.  I searched high and low for invitations that I loved and could afford.  I finally gave up and just had some custom made.  I had a very specific look I wanted.  Mine were $4+ each BUT there are some great Etsy sellers with prices way below that.  I love Etsy because you are getting custom made items without the custom price.  Well, usually.

Oh and don't even get me started on samples.  I couldn't believe the cheap crap I was getting that they wanted $600 for.

Thank you everyone, I will check out Etsy and I will order a sample of the one from David's!

I got one of the "BRIDES" kits from Michael's and DIY'ed.  They had the ribbon which I initially was not going to use but it was actually easier than I thought.  I've gotten a ton of compliments on them, even though they were what I consider untraditional - black and white and they didn't have an outer envelope.

I had just gotten a new printer and I'm good with Microsoft Word so I was easily able to spruce up the "decorations" on the printing and it didn't take them very long to put them all together.  I also DIY'ed the map picture.

Since the "envelope" was black, they came with white labels to print the addresses on.  My FMIL is very "proper" so I cleared it with her that it was ok to print labels for the invites.  I used a pretty font and then decorated the corners of the labels with a stamp and bronze ink that I purchased from Joann's.

I'll have to post my pics sometime for y'all to critique.

ETA:  I got two kits of 50 invites each for about $50 - making it $.50 per invitiation.  I purchased them when they were having a bridal half-off sale.  The stamp was about $3 and the ink pad for the stamp was $9 I think.  Super cheap and I got a ton of compliments.  :)

We used the DIY Invites from Michaels and added ribbon to match our colors and envelope lining.   The whole project cost less than $100 (and many painstaking hours) and they were great.

Brianna - I ordered samples from David's Bridal too and I thought they were very nice.  In hindsight, I'd probably go that route.

I used TheAmericanWedding.com, and they were great.  I even called them and made changes that the web order could not accomodate, and they came out perfect.  For just invites and envelopes, they were about $1.20 each.
  • edited December 2011
Yah, I'm thinking it would be a lot easier and more time efficient to just order them, rather than trying to DIY them. It will be costlier but probably worth it!

I used weddingpaperdivas.com.  It was easy, they are pretty, the end.  :)  I got pocketfolds, so I had to glue all the invites in the pocketfold.  But that's basically all the DIY involved.  Also, keep in mind that if you add a ribbon, that usually increases postage.

I got mine from theamericanwedding.com as well. I kind of fell in love with them when I saw the catalog so I didn't look around too much for myself after that. I do like seeing what people come up with though. All I got to say is the more elaborate the invites are the more you pay in postage. It is something to keep in mind.

I love the girl who did ours (We just mailed them out yesterday!)

I had her create the invitation and response card and I created a "informational card" and a belly band to go around it all.

I'm getting mine from indianweddingcard.com for obvious reasons, but I think their prices are great especially for as many invites as you need. I need about the same amount and even with shipping they were better then a lot of the quotes I was getting.

My method probably won't help you much, but I'll tell you anyway. :)

I designed the invitations myself, then I ordered the printed parts from www.uprinting.com and the cardstock and envelopes from www.cardsandpockets.com  All the DIY I had to do was to glue the printed part of the invitation to the cardstock, but the invitations are really simple, no ribbons or rhinestones or vellum or anything. I'll put up a picture soon in my bio, I swear!

I got some samples from indianweddingcard.com as well and they have great quality card stock for the price. I saw them in my Bridal Bargains book but I couldn't find any designs that I really liked. If anyone wants to see my samples I can give them to you. I got a ton in gold, pink, red and 1 blue.

Has anyone used Vistaprint? Unfortunately I don't think I can order samples from them, which makes me very sad. I hate to order them without seeing them first, but i could always order just the smallest number of invites, then the rest if i liked them. I'd only be out $10 if they sucked.

    I am using www.alaunbydesign.com

They are a company I found when I still lived in Omaha since thats where they are based but they do ALOT of out of state orders and have great weddingwire reviews.  They have a lot of different styles and you can get just the invites or you can get whole collections with thank you notes and envelopes.  Everything is completely customized to what you want and I got a few samples a couple weeks ago and they were great.

We ordered our STD's from postcards.com, and they were perfect. 300 were $42, unfortuntly we couldn't ordere 200. It's either 100 or 200. That still leaves us w/quite a bit for the actual invites, and programs. My budget is 500 as well.
