Getting in Shape

Where do you get your weight workouts?

I'm bored and unmotivated with the random weight routine I have been doing lately, but I checked out Women's Health and Shape magazines online and can't find a good whole body routine I like. Anyone have a resource they use that I haven't thought of? Or do you guys make them up yourselves? Don't get as bored as I do? Ideally I'd like something I can print off and bring to the gym with me, so not necessarily a DVD workout. Thanks!

Re: Where do you get your weight workouts?

  • SparkPeople.com has a good variety.  Both videos and printouts.  i like the Fitness plan Generator.  You punch in a few details and it gives you a handful of full workouts to try.
  • Honestly working with a personal trainer for my strength training was the best thing I ever decided to do.  I meet with her 2-4 times per month, just enough to evaluae progress and learn new things.  It really helps to see in person how to do something and receive feeback on the exercises.  I also am able to ask her other health related questions and feel confident I am getting good information.

If you want a good program, look into the New Rules of Lifting for Women, it's pretty awesome.

Oxygen magazine has some workouts too.  Or something like the Women's Health Big Book of Exercises.

Also, I've heard some good things about these workouts.

  • Thanks ladies, definitely lots to check out!

I did a quick amazon search for the book you suggested raynes, which I've seen mentioned here before. But thinking about it makes my heart flutter--I know a lot of people here are pro heavy lifting, and I'm not afriad of weights, but I do a lot of yoga and pilates now, and like the way my muscles look--thinking about change freaks me out. :) Can't hurt to check it out and read up on it though! Thanks!

  • being a gymnast, i'm a huge advocate of using your own body resistance to work out.  A lot of times, gym machines put weird pressure on joints, and can actually cause injuries.
I've been using the NikeTrainingClub app, and doing their 15 minute focused workouts.  Those things ROCK. I still can barely get through the ab workout! haha.
For lighter days, you might try looking up youtube videos for short yoga programs and things. I also check my tv for the 'FitTV" station, and record some workouts sometimes. =)
    Free, and FUN.

If you're bent on working out in a gym, then check out some freeweight moves you can do.  Again, check google or youtube for some dancer or gymnast weight routines - they usually have a good handle on focusing on fullbody motion and core strength.
