Vitamins and Supplements

I met with a personal trainer at my gym and she wanted me to start taking a multivitamin (I used to take one daily, but lately I keep forgetting), fish oil, and whey protein (I am not much of a meat-eater so she recommended doing doing a powder each morning). I'm wondering what brands anyone has to recommend and where to buy them. Thanks, girls!

Re: Vitamins and Supplements

  • I would honestly talk to your primary care physician before you start taking any vitamins/supplements just to be sure these will not interfere with medications you are on.

This.  Some can really interfere with common meds.

  • I agree with the PP that you should check with your doctor...

...but I take an adult gummy vitamin, Multivites (I take gummies b/c the fiance will take them too, but won't take a pill daily); they don't have any iron, which a lot of women need more of (again, something to talk with your doctor about).

And I've used Designer Whey Aria Women's Protein, vanilla flavored.  It's yummy.
  • Yes, definitely check with your doctor.  Your PT really isn't qualified to make those recommendations.

Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
  • Also, it's easier and more efficient for your body to absorb vitamins and nutrients from actual food than it is from supplements. You'd do better to just eat a lot of fruits and vegetables in a variety of colors.

I do take fish oil to try and help my omega 3 to omega 6 ratio and because I don't eat fish as frequently as I should do to the cost.

I'd suggest talking with your primary care physician as well as arming yourself with a bit of knowledge here at the FDA's website:

Note that the FDA observes that: "Although most people get all the vitamins they need from the foods they eat, millions of people worldwide take supplemental vitamins as part of their health regimen."

If you have a fairly normal diet and don't have a special condition (i.e. pregnant or breastfeeding), you don't need to supplement with vitamins. Just because lots of people do it doesn't mean it's what you need to do (the argument from popularity fallacy).

I read that you're not much of a meat-eater, so the whey protein can help fill the protein gap. I personally use whey protein powder to supplement my own diet when I exercise. I usually pick up the giant bags of vanilla flavor powder at Sam's Club/Costco. Google some smoothie recipes and you're golden. Remember that you can also get your protein through non-meat foods like beans, nuts, and tofu.

What to expect from a rental tuxedo.

  • I find most Whey protein powders taste like pancake batter.

The only one I can tolerate is Sun Warrior Vanilla protein powder. It's also dairy-free and vegan (don't let that scare you off), so my lactose intollerant fiance likes it.

As for vitamins, your doctor should be able to do bloodtests to see if you are low in anything. And make sure to do follow up to see if the vitamins are working and the dosage needs to be adjusted.

I have used Shakeology to give me both.  After 30 days I dropped a size and felt amazing- no more cravings for sweets, more energy.  In full disclosure, I had such great results that I am now marketing it.
