Polar watch or Fitbit

I've been thinking of getting a fitbit but someone just told me about the polar watches. Anyone have any input on which is better to track calories burned?

Re: Polar watch or Fitbit

  • i have a polar watch, and i really like it. i don't wear the heart monitor strap all day though, only when i am working out. my FI has a fitbit... he wore it for like 2 weeks then doesn't use it anymore.

[QUOTE]If you are looking for something that is going to tell you how many calories you're burning then the Polar Watch is good for you. If you are wanting something that will encourage more activity and tell you how active you are being, then I would get the fitbit.

</div><div>I mostly agree with this. If you are looking to get a bigger picture of how many calories you burn throughout the entire day and want it to sync up with a food diary, then the FitBit is amazing. I get the impression the HRM's are mostly for use during actual periods of exercise though.</div><div>

  • I also do not own a fitbit but I do own a polar HRM. I only use it for working out because it's important to me to know how efficiently I'm working and know my accurate calorie burn. Fitbit is more for all day wear, so it really depends on whether you want to know how you do all day on a normal day to day basis or if you want to know about the efficiency of your workouts.

  • I agree completely with the above posters.

If I understand correctly, the FitBit calculates calorie use based on your activity through the day, which is not as accurate as a HRM, but gives you a better bigger picture of all day.  A HRM has a chest strap that actually keeps track of your heart rate, whether or not you're in your target zone, how many calories you're burning based on age, height, weight and heart rate, the length of your exercise, etc.  You COULD wear it all day if you wanted to, I suppose, but it might get a bit uncomfortable.

  • I work at a wellness company that partners up with BOTH Polar watches and Fitbits. I think a Fitbit One is the most bang for your buck- it's cheaper than a Polar, and as long as you're doing steps or climbing stairs, it'll track it. The website is also very user-friendly.
