How to deal with comfort foods

I'm excited that my healthy diet has been going very well for the past couple weeks and I'm already starting to feel the results! However I'm worried because FI and I will be on vacation soon for two weeks in February. I'm currently living out of the US and we'll be traveling from NY to NC. Going home, for me foodwise, is SUCH a struggle. Besides the fact that we stay with family who want to feed us all day long (which we always happily oblige) just having those foods I miss and crave so much while I'm away, finally at my reach is like heaven to me! In fact last time I went home I gained a considerable amount. It's like I go nuts eating things I know I won't be able to get later.

Currently we're on a raw green smoothie diet (not as in that's all we're eating, but as in adding them in to our snacks, breakfasts and such, along with other foods) but we'll be jumping from house to house each couple of days. I don't see much chance for preparing our own foods or whipping out a blender you know?

What tips, advice, suggestions do you have for at least maintaining your weight while on vacation?

Re: How to deal with comfort foods

  • Eat what you want, but do it reasonably.  Take small portions of everything you want.  Eat healthy snacks before you go places so you're not starving.

Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
  • What J&K said. Also, drink water. It's amazing how full water makes me feel after I drink a glass within a few minutes. Finally, if you think there will be food pushers and you don't feel like eating a particular thing, just explain that you're watching your weight for the wedding.
  • The pp's are dead right.

Also, I'm doing smoothies myself and would totally bring a small Magic Bullet type blender with me.  A green smoothie will keep your vitamins up and prevent needless snacking.

It's one thing to eat something because you haven't had it in ages, it's another to gorge yourself.  Just concentrate on a touch of self-control.
  • Thanks for the tips ladies! I'll keep these in mind.
  • Know the difference of when your full and just want to keep snacking. I have altered my diet to 400 calories (each meal with some snacks) it teaches you to learn to eat just before you are full and your are just hungry for the next meal when the time rolls around. Carrot sticks have been a good go to food for snacking since can eat a bunch of them.
