Getting in Shape

Crazy Excuses?

I was just on the shuttle downtown to run an errand for my boss and there was a group of older women next to me. One of the women said quote, "Oh this humidity it just killing my back". Ok. We live in Colorado and it's BARELY humid today. It couldn't possibly be the extra 150 pounds she is carrying around that is hurting her back, could it? And, can humidity even hurt someone's back?? I don't know why, but that really bugged me. What kind of crazy excuses have you heard or have you given for being overweight or out of shape?

  • She should come to Baltimore!  It is seriously miserable outside.  It's probably worse down South too.I'm having trouble thinking of any excuses right now.  But I agree with you that it is most likely the extra weight that is hurting her back.  I never realized how much the weight can affect day to day activities until I was watching the Biggest Loser and after they lost the weight, they had to carry weights that were equivalent to their weight loss amounts.  That was really eye opening and I just can't imagine having to carry extra weight like that around.  I'd be making all kinds of excuses to not exercise because it would be painful!

  • I also think it's the extra weight. I've never heard of humidity hurting someone...isn't heat supposed to help pain? anyways, boston has had sooo much rain this summer and the day when we finally need our air conditioner because it's in the high 80s with almost 80% humidity- our air conditioner decides to break...and i'm on the top floor!!!  oh and technician can't come until thursday morning.

Ive got a friend who has gained a lot of weight since having her 2 children, she hates her weight (to the point where there are NO photos of her on FB or anything) and whenever she hears about the things im doing or my progress she says she wishes she could lose weight. I invite her to join me at the gym and try to help her with cooking and eating ideas but she just isnt interested. She doesnt have time, it is too much money, she wouldnt get to see her husband or kids enough, etc etc. I think a lot of people are really in denial that they need to change or even are as big as they are. Its easier to make excuses.
  • lgkinnicutt I know! I'm in Lowell and it's been terrible weather, now the humidity is killing me! I swear I will likely be complaining about the weather all summer. I've heard of rain bothering joints/previous injuries and sometimes the humidity I guess - but it's amazing how these things don't really bother you when you stay active! Getting to it is difficult - but you've just got to toss that monkey off your back and do it already!
  • I hate when people say they don't have enough money to eat healthy or lose weight... yet they eat out at McDonald's at least once a day or eat out all the time. Yeah, healthy food is sometimes more expensive, but you can make it work if you try! We're in the middle of a heatwave here and the hospital ER has been so full it's not even funny. People are lining the walls in beds... and that adds to the already 50+ curtained/roomed beds we have in the ER.

Before I started trying to lose weigh tthis year, I would complain to my friend who is hardcore about fitness and nutrition - he lost over 80lbs in the last year. He was always on my case that I need to do this, I need to go to the gym and I had every excuse under teh sun - the gym is too far away and it wastes over an hour getting there and back, my gym has crappy parking, etc etc. I had every excuse for WHY I was gaining weight too. He finally gave up and stopped talking to me about fitness entirely. I had to make the decision in my own time and now im doing all the things he had told me to do before (and getting a lot of "i told you so's" thrown my way heh).
  • My fi is constantly complaining about lower back pain. He refuses to believe it's because of his gut! I'm busting my butt to try to lose weight and he keeps eating whatever he wants. His parents are large people, so he believes its ok. He sees pictures of himself and says...I look fat, but then does nothing to change it. He's comfortable being heavy and that doesn't sit right with me. He'll need to realize it on his own though. Nothing I say will change it. People tell me they wish they could be as committed as me, but they never try. My co-worker is always saying how she needs to eat better and then goes and eats a snickers bar! All I can do is shake my head! I thought it was hard at first...but as soon as you get a routine and start making healthy choices...it's not hard at all.

  • My favorite is the "Baby Weight" excuse.  Well, I just had a kid.... are we talking about your 9 year old? Love that one!
  • I used to use the same excuses - "oh, I don't have time", It's too expensive to eat healthy". blah, blah, blah.  I believe for me, it's been about exchanges.I've exchanged TV time after work for workout time.  I've exchanged Chick-fil-a oreo cookie shakes for my gym membership.  I've exchanged butter for olive oil and I've exchanged my negative attitude for a better one.  It's working.
  • right on cacoffer!!! that was my motivation for the day! :-D
