healthy hummus and guacamole?

I adore hummus and guacamole, even more so since I found out that they are considered healthy. However, I want to make sure that I am eating the healthy kinds instead of a product that might be more chemicals than chickpeas/avocado. Do any of you ladies have suggestions on what brands are good and which to stay away from?

Re: healthy hummus and guacamole?

  • No brands but I would warn that the calories in hummus can add up if you eat a lot of it, and although avocado is health fat, it is VERY high in fat and calories...be careful of portions with these two.
  • Why don't you try making your own?  Both of those are really easy to make.

  • I don't know about brands for hummus, but for guacamole - make your own.  It's so easy, a little salt, lime, cilantro (if you want to add fresh herbs), some tomatoes -- so good. As for it being healthy... good fat, but high in calories.  I love it though and eat it probably once a week - I need to scale back!
  • If you're looking at brands instead of making your own, take a look at the package label.  If there's stuff that looks like there are way more syllables than you would feel comfortable pronouncing and it doesn't look like it's natural ingredients, than it has preservatives.  Simple, short ingredient lists are your best bet to stay away from unnatural substances in your food.
  • Like pp have stated - make your own - that way you can control exactly what's going into it - here's the recipe I use for my guacamole: 4 avocados, diced 1-2 med tomatoes, diced 1/2 med onion, diced1-2 cloves of garlic per avocado, minced1/2 bunch cilantro, chopped2 tomatillos, roasted over an open flame, then dicedjuice of 1 limejalapeno/serrano/habenero peppers to taste (I like things really spicy)cumindash of saltI adjust all the ingredients to taste but this is the base of it - just mash it all together and it's so good!!!  Also keep the avocado seeds in the guacamole and it will stay green longer.

  • I love guac, but don't usually don't eat it at home (I would oink out and eat a whole tub of it). With that said... I have bought guacamole before and you have to be VERY careful. There are guacamoles out that that don't even have avocado in them!!!! I accidentally bought one one time... GROSS.

  • I just tried guac for the first time last week and I'm hooked! I had it at the melting pot and it was AMAZING! I found a recipe on Eat Better America, I want to try it this week, it even includes how to make fresh tortilla chips. Here it is:http://www.eatbetteramerica.com/recipes/appetizers-snacks/healthified-garlic-guacamole.aspx

  • I make my own hummus in the food processor. It takes only minutes! Garlic, olive oil, chick peas, and lemon juice and tahini if you want it. Eat it with spinach, carrots, or cucumbers! A blender would also work, or crushing and mixing by hand. MMMMM I'm eating it right now. Try to get organic ingredients to avoid chemicals.
