Mmmm, cake.

Hi ladies.  We are thinking about our budget because we are in big-time savings mode as soon as I finish the bar exam.  I was just sort of daydreaming when I realized I have no clue how much a wedding cake costs.  I googled a bunch of the well-known bakeries, and the only one that really mentioned a price is the Cake Guys.  So I was wondering....which bakery did you use?  About how much did your cakes cost?  I'm just curious how much we are looking at.

(and I love cake.  Just ate a piece from Society Bakery at work yummmm).

I used Tastefully yours by Ruth Robbins and for Grooms cake+Brides cakes+de;ivery was about $600.
    Plus, it was yummy!

  • I am using a friend that just opened her own licensed bakery in her house. Most bakers that operate out of their homes are cheaper due to less overhead.
We are paying 450 for mine and a grooms cake for 150 guests.
  • We used Panini Cakes, and I think we paid around $2.50 a slice.

I used the Cake Guys and it was DELISH.  I think we paid $700 or something but my wedding was before they had their Sweet Inspirations package.  Plus we ordered wayyyy too much cake.  It sort of pains me to think about it now.

    Anyway, we paid $3.50/slice.

ETA:  Oh and I had a tasting scheduled with Society but we stopped with the Cake Guys.  I think I heard that they don't do wedding cakes anymore though.
  • We used Candy and Cake haven and had a bridal cake and 3-d sculpted (this drove up the price) grooms cake for 100 guests.  We paid $600.
  • I ordered my cake from The Cakery in Colleyville. For a brides cake that serves 90 and a grooms cake that serves 40, we paid 460.

  • I am using Candy Haven. Not only am I getting them but my sis had them a year ago. Both of us had up to 100 guest, bride and grooms cake plus delivery and it wasn't more than 600 bucks.

Plus their chocolate covered strawberries are to die for!
  • Yeah, Society doesn't do weddings anymore.  Yummm.  Thanks ladies.

  • We are paying a little under $400 for both cakes and using Tabitha Ballard (www.cakesbydesigndfw.com). I believe she is $2/slice (buttercream) and a $45 delivery fee.

  • I also used The Cake Guys, and had their Sweet Inspirations package. For 130 guests we paid $695 for the '125 person' package, and that proved to be way too much cake. Looking back I do wish I would have gone with the 100 person package, as that would have been more than enough.
For my birthday last year a friend got me a cake from Romanos (white with banana cream filling), which was equally delicious. Sadly, I don't know anything about their pricing.

A lot of advice I've heard on budgeting cake, is to get a smaller decorated/tiered cake for show, and then to have a big sheet cake made to be served. That way you can still do something fun and exciting, but still serve a lot of people on the cheap.
  • I also think it's worth noting that if you have more than one flavor, more cake is going to get eaten because people will want to sample all the flavors. For this reason we are just doing one flavor for each cake.
  • I also used Ruth Robbins with Tastefully Yours, and it was to die for! I can not wait to dig into our anniversary layer! I drool thinking about it! I paid $3.25 a slice for better cream icing...

<div>I've actually heard that this is not as much of a money saver as one would think.  In the end, you're paying for the cake.  Especially if you have a fairly simple design.  It's worth checking out, of course, but definitely not a budget saver.</div>

  • Good point about the sampling if there is more than one flavor.  I hadn't thought of that!

You still don't want to order too much.  Each of our tiers was a different flavor AND everyone got two pieces served to them and there was still a ton left.
  • I'm going with Mckinley's Bakery in Ft Worth...they don't do "wedding" cakes, which means I'm ordering the cakes and stacking/tiering/decorating myself. I'm fine with that since I origionally wanted to make the whole cake myself. After numerous tastings, they were the BEST!!  I go in every week or so just to get a fix and make my belly happy! Laughing

    I figured 93 servings...$250
  • We used Texas Star Bakery in Hurst.  They charged $3 a slice for buttercream icing.  I added a few things, but it was about $500 for both cakes.  We also had 3 different flavors of cake in the wedding cake.  It was delish!
  • We used Ruth Robbins with Tastefully Yours and our cake.was.AWESOME.  We had many, many comments from guests and other vendors that it was the best wedding cake they'd had. We paid around $600 to serve 115 people, bride + groom's cake.  I would absolutely recommend her to any bride.  I can't WAIT to order a cake from her for our anniversary!!!  We decided not to save the top tier because, well, let's face it... it tastes like crap after a year in the freezer.  The frosting already tastes weird after less than 2 weeks, and I wrapped it 4 times in premium Saran Wrap and then four layers of foil on top of it + 2 baking soda boxes in our tiny freezer. :(

  • We are using Sweet Art Bakery in McKinney. Paying $669.00 for Bride and grooms cake serving about 150 guests. She also makes a fresh top layer for our anniversary. No nasty frozen cake. I'm having 2 flavors for brides cake and just one for groom.

</div><div>Hm, I figured a simple sheet cake + a small fancy cake would be much less money than for a giant, fanc, decorated cake. Maybe if you were trying to serve like, 500 people (no lie...I actually know someone who planning a wedding where that is her minimum amount, both bride and groom are from huge catholic families. Holy crap that's a lot of people!)</div>

<div>That would certainly factor in.  We had almost 300 guests, so service for that many people was the same unless we went with like Kroger cake (which are delicious, btw).  If you have a really small guest list, a small cake would probably be enough anyway without the sheet cake.</div>

  • I'm using Tabitha Ballard. Brides cake 4 teir for 125 ppl and grooms cake 1 layer for 75 people including delivery is $450....I couldn't find anything better than that. I'm so excited about the flavors too!! Champange with vanilla buttercream was ohhhmazing

  • Sandy Chang with Sandy's Unique Imprints starts at $3 a slice
  • If you really want to save money--don't do the groom's cake, just do one cake with simple flavors and a simple--but pretty--design.

We spent $550 with Ruth Robbins for both cakes.
