HRM question

I have a potentially dumb question about heart rate monitors. Is there one out there that tells you how many calories you've burned? I was reading about the FitBit but it seems like you have to log onto the internet and estimate the calories burned yourself. Is that accurate? I would rather have one that knows my age, height, weight  etc and tells me how many calories i've actually burned. I do P90X and 10 minute trainer and i've seen the estimates for calories burned online but I know that everyone is different. Does this device exist? Or am I looking too far into the future and it hasn't been invented yet? Thanks in advance!

Re: HRM question

  • Yes, I believe most HRM now will tell you calories burned...however, the FitBit is NOT a heart rate monitor. It tracks your calories burned based purely on movement combined with your height, weight and age...so it's just a guestimate.

I love my fitbit though and for the most part the calories burned is pretty accurate.

  • Yeah, my actual calories burned on workouts varied a LOT from the estimates.

My Polar FT7 Does all that.  You just put in your info (hieght/weight/etc) and then it tracks during workout with a chest strap for monitoring.

</div><div>PLEASE don't need I'm trying to be snarky, I totally mean this as a serious question (lol.. I know.. not the best way to start off) But I respect you as a poster, entropic, so I don't want you thinking I'm being a bish. lol</div><div>
</div><div>IF you have a fitbit, and you know it's a guestimate... how do you know it's accurate? Have you tested it against another HRM or are you assuming based on what it says and what an activity typically is or..? </div><div>Just curious. </div><div>I haven't picked out a HRM because I'm picky as heck and don't want to get the wrong one.</div>
