Breakfast ideas

I am a really new poster - but a long time lurker!  I'm getting married on 7/3 in St. Thomas.  I have been doing really well with my fitness/eating healthy routine over the last 6 months.  I still have some pounds to shed, but I've really changed my lifestyle in the last several months which to me, is more important than shedding some pounds for the wedding.

My routine of late consists of cardio (usually spinning) 3-4X/week, and lifting 3/4X/week (usually taking 1-2 days off per week).  I work out early in the morning, usually drinking a protein shake with almond milk, a banana, and Bio Chem mix before I work out.

I struggle with what to eat after my workout - usually because I'm in a big hurry to shower, get ready & get to work on time.  I'm usually very hungry since I've been at the gym for 1-2 hours.  Sometimes I end up at Dunkin Donuts eating a flatbread veggie sandwich, which calorie-wise isn't so bad, but I'd like to get some ideas of what else to eat that is better for me.  Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks much!!

Re: Breakfast ideas

  • OMg totally me... I always end up running to the shower or running errands after the gym and I know that's bad for my bod to not get that nutrition right after a hard gym day.

A couple things I try to keep in my car:
    -Banana
    -Apple
-Annie's or Kashi bar (Watch for sugar content though... Some are great, some are awful)

Then If I'm running errands I know I put SOMETHING (usually the banana) in the system.

Another thing I do is every Sunday I boil a bunch of hardboiled eggs. I also keep Almonds and Pistachios in the house. Even if I'm racing to the shower, I can munch on those as I'm jumping in. (great image I know.. so hott.. :P )

If nothing else, the protein shake (although I use this option as sparingly as possible because it's not exactly "natural" and I'm a "clean eater") It's quick and filling with plenty of protein to help your muscles rebuild after those tough lifting sessions.

  • Make these:  http://www.kalynskitchen.com/2006/10/egg-muffins-revisited-again.html

I make them for my H for breakfast (and me too for a snack).  They're egg muffins.  i put ham, mushroom, bell pepper, and cheddar in ours.  I can bake them up on Sunday and they stay fresh tasting in the fridge all week just in a ziploc baggie.  Microwave for just like 15 seconds and they're delicious! (I like them fresh from the fridge too)  I usually eat them 2 at a time at standard muffin size but you could make them in a larger muffin tin.
  • FI and I make homemade granola and granola bars.  We make a big two-week batch every other week to keep us going.  FI eats the granola bars while on the road, but I prefer mixing the granola into a greek yogurt.
Some of my coworkers also keep things in the office and make oatmeal while checking their emails.

  • I second Anna's suggestion of the egg muffins.  I made a big batch last Sunday and they're wonderfully portable and a great source of protein for breakfast- keeps me energized and full until 12:30-1:00.

Anna, I don't know if you saw in the morning thread on SB earlier this week but THANK YOU for the recipe.  It's fantastic and totally changed my daily menu.
  • Those egg muffins look awesome!!  I just ordered silicone muffin tins from Amazon, so I see them in my future very soon.

What kind of goodies do you typically put in them?

    Thanks for the suggestions!

  • Those egg muffins do look good!  I like to have yogurt with fruit (dried cranberries, or cut up banana, or cut up apple, etc.) and granola.  I usually do half a serving of granola because it's so heavy in calories.  But it's filling, has protein, and if you use the Dannon Light & Fit, only about 260 to 300 calories per serving.

Once upon a time, there was a boy who loved a girl, and her laughter was a question he wanted to spend his whole life answering.
  • I"m going to try the egg muffins. I work a split shift and I usually skip breakfast. However with working out now during my breaks I can't eat before the workout and after I really don't feel like it. These are something I can take with me to eat when I get to work. I bet the FI and the kids will like them also..

  • Could you make them with aluminum instead of silicon?
  • I love oatmeal in the mornings and usually sprinkle in some raisins so that I get a little extra.  It has been a good way to start the mornings and I stay fuller longer.
