Getting in Shape

upset..I just don't get it

Why can't I lose any weight. Its like no matter what I do it doesn't move and I just want to cry. I did not order my dress too small but when it came in it was too small. We went by my measurements for ordering it and my measurements fit exactly. Now here I am trying my butt off to get into in in 2 and a half months and NOTHING is happening! I just want to cry! I've been counting my calories, trying to eat 6 small meals/snacks. Trying to eat more fruits veggies and not much breads and things. Drinking water ALL. DAY. Like 8 to 12 glasses per day and no sugary drinks at all. Plus exercising. I'm just upset and needed to get that out because its really getting me down and I just have to fit into that dress! My seamstress said there isn't much room to let it out and I'm about 3 inches from zipping. Its already a corset back but has a zipper on my butt. The only other thing I can think of is maybe extending the corset all the way down and adding a piece of fabric for privacy.

  • Yes I use MFP and stay at 1200 calories a day. I've been walking and doing some exercise DVDs and workouts I found online.

  • Are you eating back some of the calories that you burned from exercise? That can cause you to go into starvation mode like pp mentioned.

Are the workout videos all mainly cardio? Could try doing some weightlifting to build more muscle which wil help you burn more calories.

Also take a look at the summary on MFP to see if your getting the right amounts of protein and carbs and such to make sure you have a balanced diet.

If you really believe your doing everything you can in terms of food and exercies and still not losing weight then it might be a good idea to see a doctor to see if there could be some underlying reason of why your not losing weight.

  • As for the dress did your measurements since ordering change? If not then it definitely would be the stores responsibility to fix the problem, is there a chance there could be an error on the manufacturers end like maybe wrong size sent?

[QUOTE]It sounds like you might be under eating.  If you're only netting 1200 calories, then you could be in starvation mode.  If you're burning 300 calories exercising, you need to eat those 300 calories back.

<div>That could be.  Unless she's quite small already.  A lot of short and slimmer girls can get away with lower number because their bodies do not need nearly the amount of daily cals to function like someone my size.</div>
  • I am so sorry you are having such a hard time! I would definitely suggest follwing the advice of pp, but also further investigate extending the corset back on your dress as a back up plan. I hope everything works out for you and you lose enough for the zipper to close! Also, one thing that could be keeping the pounds in place is stressing about losing the weight. If anyone in the world can relate to your stress its the women on this board and with 6wks to go for me I totally feel you. I would suggest taking a day to just relax and rejuvenate yourself. Mani/pedi, a massage, relaxing walk in the park, whatever you need to do to relax and get centered. I've noticed when I stress out, as of late, it effects the intensity of my workouts, and it's like my body wants to cling to absolutely everything. Take a breather and get recentered, that might help you achieve your goal. I will definitely pray for some stress relief to come your way. I think you can make it happen, just breathe and we will encourage you every step of the way :-)

  • No I haven't consulted a doctor YET. I want to because I'm at a loss of what to try next. I'm just waiting on a paycheck and hopefully I can squeeze a visit into my budget. This month. I know diabetes runs in my family but I've never been diagnosed. My mom had thyroid problems and that could potentially be an issue with me as well. I've been unhappy about the weight for a long time I gained some at 18 or 19 from the depo but I gained a lot when my Dad died from depression and since then it just hasn't budged. Overall I've put on 100 lbs and I would be happy to just lose 50. Not by the wedding just in general!

  • I'm no medical expert, but it sounds to me like you may not be eating enough to nourish yourself and you could be in starvation mode.  Two other elements:

    1.  While your calories may be low, is it possible your mix isn't ideal and you're not actually getting enough nourishment?  What's your carb/fats/protein mix on average?

    2.  What are you doing by way of workouts?  Are you working intensely enough to burn calories?  Are you lifting / doing other resistance work to build lean muscle & tone?  While all activity is better than none, you can get a lot more bang for your buck if you're doing the right types of workouts.

Don't get discouraged.  The science usually doesn't fail, so if all of the above are not issues, then I would definitely consult with a physician for more personalized diagnosis.

  • I'm glad your goals aren't just for the wedding :)  I think that you're aiming for this lifestyle is a wonderful thing.

I have absolutely no basis for it beside my own opinion, but even if you weren't eating enough calories, I really don't think you'd be continuing to gain, or not losing a single lb with your workout schedule.  I think the doctor is truly your best bet, especially if there are thyroid issues in your family already.  I know those issues aren't always genetic, but there is that risk.

Just remember while you get this figured out, that weight loss or not, the workout and diet change are making you healthier on the inside - and that's what matters!  Be proud of yourself, even if your body isn't cooperating.

  • I'd say you need to factor what your BMR is. You can use google to find a BMR calculator. Keep in mind your body requires a certain amount of calories (energy) just to function daily (breathing, digestion etc) ...any activity other then sitting on the couch allllllll day will burn more calories. If you are exercising a lot and only eating 1200 calories a day you are burning out your metabolism. If you up your calories, eat clean WHOLE foods nothing packagedin the grocery store and exercise and you still don't lose weight I would def seek out an endocrinologist to have test your thyroid and hormone levels. If it is hypothyroid it would make losing weight, almost I possible.

[QUOTE]I do eat the calories back to stay at 1200 net. And heck no I'm not a skinny girl. I'm a size 16. 230 lbs. My dress was a special order so there isn't much the shop could do. When I tried it on in the shop I THOUGHT it fit. The salesgirl pulled it up around my waist to make it zip and I didn't realize it because I couldn't tell in the mirror.

Chances are you're not accurately tracking your calorie intake. It takes a significant number of calories (over double what you claim you're taking in) to just maintain at 230lbs. If you're serious about losing weight, you also need to do more than "walk sometimes" or do workout videos without external accountability. It's time to talk to a trainer, or get a gym membership for a month to get some serious working out in.
It is possible to drop significant weight and size if you stick to three simple rules.
1.) Calorie intake must be less than calorie expenditure. BURN more than you eat. Starvation mode is very, very rarely the problem. Notice: anorexic girls? Still get skinnier and skinnier until they need hospitalization and rehab. I don't advocate that kind of behavior, but "eating too little," unless there is a doctor's medically validated reason, is NOT the reason for "weight gain" or maintainance.

2.) Exercise more. It has been my experience that what/how much you eat is 80% of how you look, the rest is genetics and exercise. Walking is NOT a significant cardio expenditure. Running is. Interval training (30 second to 1 minute intervals of sprinting, for example, interspersed with 2 minute recovery periods) is, circuit training (weight set, jumping jacks for 1 minute, weight set, burpees for 1 minute, etc.) is HUGELY effective. Even hiking has more cardio and toning benefits than walking between 2.0-4.0mph.

3.) Water. Drink more. 8 glasses a day is a bare minimum for a human body. I drink over a gallon a day for weight loss purposes, and it WORKS.

There are "rules" everywhere for successful weight loss. Most are bunk. If what you're doing or have been doing isn't working, it's time for an overhaul.
  • I tend to agree with a lot of the suggestion above.  I think you need to eat more, but quality food-- lean proteins, veggies and a little fruit.  If you have grains, make them whole and eat them earlier in the day.  I myself, try to eat 40%/30%/30% (protein/fat/carbs and most of my carbs come from fruit and veggies, you have to find what works for you.)

If you want to get into that dress you are going to have to work HARD.  Walking probably isn't enough- it's better than nothing, but isn't as intense as you need.  I try to do HIIT (high intensity interval training.)  Get on a elliptical, bike, stairs...whatever- start out at a moderate pace and then crank is for as high as you can for as long as you can hold it--- will likely only be 15-30 seconds.  Your heart rate should be cranking!  Then recover a bit and repeat as few times.  You will be able to do more intervals as you get in better shape.  That will get you more results than an hour of walking.  Someone else mentioned circuit training- awesome!

Lastly, if you use MFP, share your user name with us...and then-- this really makes  you accountable--- make your food diary public.  I do that now and I think it helps.

You can do this!  It's just really hard work.  I feel for you, I've struggled with my weight all my life, until now (I'm 34!) and I tell you it's about building good habits with food and lifestyle and finding a variety of exercises that keeps your body challenged.

    Don't give up!
