New to Spinning

I am taking my first spin class next week. What do I need and what should I expect? Thanks!

Re: New to Spinning

  • I'd bring a towel and lots of water.
As for what to expect, if it's your first class, a really sore bum! ahaha it's true, but it goes away after the first few sessions!!
    enjoy, I love spin!
  • Yes to lots of water.  Get to class early and ask the instructor to help get your seat to the correct height and distance - it will make a HUGE difference and will help avoid injury.  Also, I recommend two pairs of shorts if you don't have bike shorts.

  • Arrive early so the instructor can help you set up the bike properly.   Bring water and a towel; wear comfortable clothes.  The instructor will guide you through the ride, telling you when to sit or stand, and when to increase the resistance (simulating going uphill), and when to decrease.  Don't worry about what everyone around you is doing - it's your ride.  If you need to back off or sit down, go ahead.  Your butt will be sore for the first few classes.  Give it more than one try to see if you like it.  If you do decide to attend regularly, I recommend getting some cycling shoes that clip into the pedals, and some bike shorts.  If you don't want the spandex bike shorts or tights, REI sells some padded briefs and boyshorts you can wear under regular shorts or sweat pants.

Enjoy!  Spinning is a great workout, and a fun addition to other gym activities.

  • I LOVE spinning!! Like PP said definitely arrive about 5 minutes early so the instructor can help get your bike set up. This will help a lot with comfort and avoiding injury. Definitely bring lots of water and a towel. Wear light clothes - I always opt for yoga capris instead of full length pants. Be prepared for your butt to be pretty sore the first time. If you have to take a break and stand up on the bike thats ok, expect to do that the first few times. Have fun!!
