NWR: Atkin's Diet

I'm desprately wanting to drop the 15 pounds I've gained since the wedding and my mom recommended trying the Atkin's diet. Today is day 1 and I'm doing ok. I went shopping yesterday for everything I'd be able to eat for phase 1. I will admit, I'm kind of hungry, and have been all day.

Have any of you done this diet before? If so, can you give any advice, recipes, etc? I'm open to anything!! Thanks!

i will highly steer you away from the diet. i'm a certified lifestyle and weight management consultant and personal trainer. it is not a good diet and will only be temp weight loss. i know it is frustrating gaining weight, i'm trying to lose 10-15 lbs myself before the wedding. how's your workout? what made you gain the weight? did your diet change after the wedding?

I have to agree with Bridget.  I didn't think anyone had done this diet since 2001.

If you wanted to lose weight temporarily like FOR the wedding, I might say yeah, try it.  But this is not an effective way to lose weight and keep it off.  The weight you lose, if any, will return once you begin eating normally.

I am much more in favor of focusing on eating healthy and upping your workouts to burn more calories than you take in to lose the weight.  Try to pinpoint why you gained the weight--are you eating later at night, cooking more, eating because of stress, exercising less, etc.?  Then focus on making those lifestyle changes that caused the weight gain in the first place so that once the weight is gone, it stays off.

I've gain what everyone is calling "happy" weight. Basically since the wedding day, i've been gaining weight because I'm not worrying about keeping it off for the wedding. Normally, it wouldn't bother me too much, but I have a small torso and you can see where I've gained all the weight. I'm not going to be crazy about this diet, just trying to eat healthier.

And I'm terrible at working out, by the way.

I did this diet when it was popular and before the health risks of it were known. I lost a TON of weight, but like Stephi and Bridget said, the second I started eating "normal" again I gained it all back...and more! I would NOT recommend this at all. Now, I'm no great eater or exerciser myself I just know my experience with this diet.

I am doing weight watchers and I love it because it trains you to eat right... it helps you learn the right portions and its ok to splurge now and then but not every day...

I would suggest WeightWatchers, even though I've triend and failed three times on it. I just cant stand keeping track of the points--but if you feel like you can, I would do it!

I'm on Weight Watchers right now.  I've lost 6.4 pounds in 3 weeks.  I highly recommend it.  It's definitely made me realize why I was gaining weight before and how the crap I was eating was affecting me.  I also work out, too.  But my MIL and my sister have both done WW and have been successful at it.   Please don't do the Atkins diet.....it's just not worth it.  And if you're just wanting to "eat healthier", eat more lean meats, more protein, more vegetables and fruits and drink water...don't resort to a diet that restricts your foods-it's just setting you up for failure in the end.

After reading and thinking about what Stephanie and Bridget said, I'm not going to do the Atkin's diet. You would not believe how grumpy I was yesterday! And so weak and hungry.

I'm going to look at Weight Watchers. See how I do there.

Thanks for all of your help and support, ladies!

I tried WW once.  I got a turkey sandwich from Subway, a diet coke and baked Lays and used up my entire points for the day.  So long WW.

But others have had good luck with it, I know.  :)
