What to do about ordering my wedding dress

After a doctor's appointment last week, I decided I need to make some changes.  I need to exercise and change my diet.  Now here's the question, I have started to make some of these changes and I anticipate losing some weight.

My wedding is September 24, 2011.  When should I order my dress?  If things are going well, should I order a size smaller?  I have nightmares of trying to squeeze into a dress that I've ordered too small.  Should I order what fits and have it altered if necessary?  Does anyone have similar concerns or experience?

Re: What to do about ordering my wedding dress

  • It's much easier to take a dress in than let it out, so I wouldn't advise ordering a smaller size.

I got my dress a couple weeks ago, and even though I plan on losing about 15 more lbs., I got the size that fit now. From what I've been told, they can take most dresses in up to 2 sizes, but make sure you talk to the alterations people to double check before you order.
  • Can you wait until a little closer to time to order your dress? You'd be able to know for sure what progress you've made and what you're capable of doing.

  • Rule of thumb for dress ordering is to give yourself at least 8 months for it to come in.  Most designers take less, once in a while it takes more.  You still have a couple months before you need to order, although if you have a specific designer you looove (mine was Maggie), you can ask the bridal shop how long it generally takes for those dresses to come in.

Do yourself a favor, and order the size you are when you order the dress.  That way, you don't pressure and stress yourself about fitting if you don't lose the weight.  Like a PP mentioned, most dresses can be taken in up to 2 sizes, although it can vary depending on the structure of it.  I would ask the shop's alterations department about this before you order, if you think you will lose that much before the wedding.

  • First tip: ask your bridal shop what's the latest you can safely order your dress before your wedding (mine will also be a Maggie, and they told me March 2011 for October 2011).

Second: Order the size that you are when you order the dress. You never know how your body is going to lose weight, or at what point you'll plateau.

Third: If you know that you want to lose more weight by the time of when you order, consider going with a corset back. Most dresses can be taken in up to 2 sizes, but corsets are typically easier (also, ask the bridal shop to confirm how easy it will be to alter down).
  • Order your dress the size you are now. I ordered a too small dress and, although I lost weight, it still didn't fit.

  • When I ordered my gown, I was a size 14 and less than a year later, I am a size 6 and after having it altered, it fits like a glove. It's easier to take a dress in than out so order it a little bigger just so it won't be a problem.
