Pregnant Bride to be - getting married after baby. When to buy dress?

I am 24 weeks pregnant(due Aug 11) and am getting married two months after the baby is born (Oct 5). Went looking at dreses the other day, and truly realized how big baby bump has gotten.

My dilemma is this....do I continue looking for a wedding dress now, and buy it two sizes bigger, altering it after the baby is born? Or....do I wait until the baby is a month old and I've lost some of the baby weight and buy off the rack? Please share you thoughts!!

If it helps, I really want a strapless gown with a bigger bottom and pick ups in the skirt. :)

  • I would actually ask at a bridal shop or a seamstress (preferably the store/seamstress that you would be using)

My little sister is pregnant right now and they took her measurements before she was showing and are ordering her dress in that size with a corset back because she will have 2 months after the baby is born before my wedding. Everyone is different though. My sister tends to LOSE weight when she's pregnant so they were pretty confident ordering a dress in her "pre baby bump" size.

  • I think it would kind of depend on your budget and how much you want the perfect dress. If you found the perfect dress now and got it big, the alterations could be pretty pricy, but you would be more likely to get the dress of your dreams. If it was me I would go that route just because I couldn't imagine trying to find a wedding dress off the rack a month before the wedding. I was just be so stressed I couldn't find anything I liked. Congrats on the baby, I hope it all turns out well for you :)
  • Is this your first pregnancy?  I ask because pregnancy can permanently change your entire body even after you lose the baby weight.  Your breasts could end up permanently larger or even smaller (this happened to my sister).  Your hips will be wider and probably stay that way and then there's your waist.  My oldest daughter was always tiny until she had her first and her stomach never went back to normal and she had to wear a support for almost a year and even then it still wasn't the way it was before.  If you choose to breastfeed, your boobs will still be bigger at that time.

I know you're factoring in body changes to your sizing, but they might also affect what styles look good on you.  I would personally wait and buy one used or off the rack.  There are more weddings in the next few months than in your month so there will be more brides selling their dresses and more options.  I know there will be more stress with a newborn and last minute wedding details, but I would be afraid that something that looks great on you now may end up wonky on your post-baby body.

  • Thank you so much for your responses! I decided to just wait and buy off the rack. I was bummed because I know not every dress is available "off the rack" but I did just learn that any David's Bridal dress can be bought off the rack. That made me feel better with the decision.

    Thanks again for the help!!
