New to the Getting in Shape Blog! Need some help!

Hi everyone! I have always had issues with my weight and self image and do not want to go dress shopping until I am somehat close to my goal. Luckily I have time because my wedding is September 2013! I was wondering if someone could help me out, I have been exercising regularly for the past two weeks and know that i need to change my diet as well (which isnt the hardest part believe it or not). Does anyone have any exercise routines they could share that have worked or that may work? I go to the gym in the a.m. and only have an hour to exercise. I will also be starting zumba 2 times a week for the next 5 weeks (thanks to an awesome groupon deal) Thank you!!!

  • Welcome!  I'm pretty new here too.  Zumba is an excellent choice!  I also like to do intervals on cardio equipment (30 seconds of a difficult resistance or speed and 1 minute to 1.5 minutes of rest (easier speed) to recover).  I hear that burns more calories, so I like to try that.  I also like to do weights two to three times a week.  I usually do less sets, but work the full body.  Some other people like to focus on one or two areas each weight day.  I also use myfitnesspal.com.  You can log your workouts and food and it shows you "net" calories, so you're eating enough for your amount of activity.  You can also add friends on there for motivation.  Good luck!

Once upon a time, there was a boy who loved a girl, and her laughter was a question he wanted to spend his whole life answering.
  • Thank you! I will defenitely need the motivation! I lack that unfortunately. lol
  • Your exercise sounds just fine.  As long as you watch your diet it should be more than enough.

As the pp said, there are sites like MyFitnessPal and SparkPeople that are great for free calorie tracking.  A healthy food lifestyle is SO important to weight loss.

    Questions:

*How much do you have to lose?

*What is your diet like now?

*If you know you need to change your diet and that it's not the hardest part, why wait until now to change it?

*What is your lifetime health/fitness goal?

Also, just and fyi: this is a board not a blog.  Blogs are person web-logs that some ladies have links to in their signatures.  Great for motivation if you get a chance to read some.
  • Sorry, I didn't realize I put blog. The hardest part is for me to stay motivated. I have been on and off diets my entire life, I end up losing motivation then going off my diet.
  • OP - I have noticed that since I started using myfitnesspal.com I hold myself a LOT more accountable. I highly recommend checking it out :)

If you make lifestyle changes, there will be no diet to fall off of.

As I asked before, what is your diet like now?  It's easier to help you if we have details.
  • Thanks for asking these questions!  And thank you to the ladies who responded with the tip to join MyFitnessPal.com.  I just did, and entered my food so far for today (It's 3:22p.m. California time) and according to that site, I have used all but 240 calories for my whole day.  I would have had no idea that I had used up that many calories and would've gone home and had a full dinner had I not just joined that site!!

My wedding day is Sunday, September 2, 2012, and I think with the help of that site I will be able to slowly lose about 1 lb a week and not be a crazy, starved Bridezilla as a result.  So thank you!  And good luck everyone!!

  • I am going to download the Myfitnesspal and see if that helps, I was on weight watchers for a while and did well, but hated the fact that I had to count points for EVERYTHING. I am looking to lose 25 pounds before the big day.

As for right now, my diet is pretty well balanced and I know portion control, but I LOVE sweets. That and snacking seems to be my main problems. Last year I had worked with a personal trainer for 2 months which helped me learn new healthier eating habits and some new exercises but to be honest, I think I primarily lack the motivation. I fall off the tracks often because of it as well.

I need to find ways to stop snacking after dinner and cut back on the sweets, (cake, cookies, chocolate). And I understand it's a lifestyle change, but it is difficult to drastically change the way you have been living your life. I think that with my mentality, its going to have to be a gradual learning change.

Any helpful hints on how to keep myself motivated, new exercises routines, tips like apps that may be helpful for this success would be wonderful. Thank you all in advance.
  • Zumba is a great workout, and a ton of fun too! I would also recommend adding some weights into your workout along with the cardio. Three of my good friends belong to the same gym as I do, and we attend classes together, which really holds me accountable. Do you have anyone to workout with?
  • I am going to zumba with my friend, and I go to the gym with my fiance but he does his own thing considering men and women are very different regarding losing weight and gaining muscle. I get so mad when we begin and he loses weight quicker and builds muscle faster simply because he is a man and i am a woman, but that's the way the cookie crumbles lol
  • One other suggestion, if you have trouble resisting sweets and snacks:  Don't buy them!  This is the ONLY way that I can control my diet.  If it's in my house, I'll eat it, but at the store, I can stick to what is on my list.
    Good luck!
