Getting in Shape

The new Xbox Kinect...

Has anyone seen it? My DF wants one, and while I dread having yet another gaming thingy in our home, I was looking at it, and they have lots of exercise "games" that I thought could be fun and exercise at the same time.

I hate going to the gym, I don't like hearing other people work out, or seeing all the already fit people going super hardcore and here I am putting along heart pounding short of breath WALKING on a treadmill.

I need to lose about 40 pounds to fit into my wedding dress. My mom bought it for me September of last year, it was being discontinued and I love it, still do to this day. Only problem...I've gained a bit of weight since she bought it for me.

I've read that using my dress to motivate me isn't good, and other things about losing weight. But I just can't motivate myself. I hate exercising, I feel terrible when I exercise, and I feel self concious in a public setting.

Anyways cut the pity party short....Has anyone else thought of getting the new Kinect? I like that I can exercise in my own home and it tracks my progress online Smile

1st, yes, I've thought about getting the Kinect, it looks really cool. I've heard that the Wii Fit equivalent is pretty good. I havent' looked into it too much though.

Now to touch on what I've bolded above:
I don't like hearing other people work out
If you don't like to hear people working out, wear headphones. Zone out.

seeing all the already fit people going super hardcore
Everyone started somewhere. How do you think those people go to be the way they are? I bet you that not all of them were magically fit to begin with.

I've read that using my dress to motivate me isn't good,
Honestly, whatever gets you motivated it good. Just be prepared to have to buy a new dress, or have a corset put in this one.

I hate exercising, I feel terrible when I exercise, and I feel self concious in a public setting
When I first started really working out, I was miserable. It sucked. I hurt the next day, and would get so red faced and winded I was miserable. But I stuck with it. I pushed through, and do you know what? It got better. Now, I relish the idea of a really killer workout, because I know I'll get that high after. I challenge myself to do better each and every time I hit the gym.
Do you hate exercising, or just hate the exercise you were doing? If it's the second one, try something new. If it's the first one, just stick with it for a bit.
As for feeling self conscious, you just have to get over yourself. This ties back in to what I said above. Everyone has to start somewhere. People are NOT judging you, so tell your brain to STFU and just do it.

  • I agree with everything Raynes said. Some other things to think about doing that don't require going to the gym : running or walking outdoors, 30 day shred(jillian michaels has some great workout dvds), zumba classes are super fun.. It also really helps to get a workout buddy to keep you motivated.

You don't have to go to a gym to get in shape, but I don't know that you will get the results that you want from an xbox game, wii game, etc.
  • I lost my first 25 pounds on the Wii... I am very interested to see how the kinex works, but I don't know if I want to invest in another gaming system... If you try it, please let me know how it is... Smile

  • my husband just got the new Kinect, and he loves it. he's a huge gamer, but definitely not an exerciser - he was so sore the next day. the sensor really does read every movement, so there's no way to really cheat, you've got to do all the moves.

i haven't tried the fitness games, but they look like pretty legit, and they might be a really good starting point. it is a pretty big investment, though, especially if you're not sure you'll stick with it. we might buy the kickboxing game, so the hubby can start working out again.

all that being said, Raynes is definitely right on with everything she said - you've got to start somewhere, and you really can't compare yourself with anyone else, because you have no clue what their fitness journey has been like. if an xbox game is just an excuse to work out at home instead of in a gym, i'd recommend getting some good workout videos instead - much cheaper.
  • My FI is a store manager at Game Stop so we're getting one for free and we're definitely going to get one of the workout games to try it out! My FI hasn't really been in to working out like I have, so I think this will be a way to get him to join me! I'm excited! Plus....I want kinectimals..... ;-]
  • I'm near Seattle and I was in the final trials for it. It was amazingly fun. It totally kicked my behind, too. I was in agony the next day. Nice thing is it is something you guys can enjoy together to some extent. Just make sure you have a towel nearby because you will sweat!

But why wouldn't you serve ice cream with the cake?
  • We got one and it's great! I have the Biggest Loser, Your Shape Fitness, Dance Central and Kinect Adventures (the one it came with) so far. I can't wait for the Zumba game to come out next!

It is a good variety and I also have the Wii fit/EA Sports Active, but Kinect is a better workout by far.

Plus it's fun and motivating for us to play together... especially now that it's getting cold out and we're toning down the hiking and other outdoor activities.
