Getting in Shape

Why do the models have to look so hot in the bridal gowns?

I haven't started dress shopping yet. But I think I need to lose some weight so I don't feel so discouraged after seeing all of these models in wedding gowns. I don't want to think it's the most beautiful dress in the world and fall in love with it only to be disappointed when I try it on in the store. Oh well, that's life.

Re: Why do the models have to look so hot in the bridal gowns?

  • It helped for me to make fun of their poses.

    Some look dead.
    Some looked completely bored.
And others look like they are hunching their backs WAY too much (like the one in your sig).  I hunched my back like that when I was trying on, and called it the "model pose" and pouted my lips out and everything.

    Humor helped for me.

  • I don't think most wedding dress models look that hot, they are too skinny, no curves just stick skinny, they're in funny poses and look so unhappy.

I know what you mean.. For me, though, when I started shopping I was really impressed by how figure flattering some of the dresses were. Particularly a lace-up dress that fits - it did wonders for my shape! I'll admit I didn't feel like a model, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I had been anticipating... Just try not to stress yourself out about it - no real person will ever look like those models do in any kind of clothes...

Also, try your hardest not to fall in love with a dress online. I know everyone says it and I didn't believe it, but all of the ones I thought I would love looked terrible on. The ones I thought I would hate but tried on only to humour my mother were the ones I loved the most. So if you fall in love with a dress online, you might well be disappointed when you try it on, but not because of your weight - rather because it's just the wrong style for you.

Yup....the model in my dress looks dead (even with the smirk on her face).

This exactly.  The dress you end up with may very well be one you never in a million years thought you'd like, you'll think it looks gross on the hanger, but you try it on because someone says you should.

The best advice I can give it to try on all different sorts of styles.    You can't know for sure whether or not something will look good until you try it on!

  • Look at the models' faces and hair. They are not particularly attractive. I think the designers particularly make the models' makeup and hair not flattering, so the dress will stand out.  Focus on how beautiful and radiant your face will be on the day you get married.

  • I'm confident I can find a dress that will look great on me, and I will feel like royalty. I am trying not to fall in love with dresses online because I have a feeling most of the ones that I like won't look the same on me (ahem....the one in my sig).

  • Then not only do the models have small petite bodies in their dresses, you go to actually try on the dress, and it looks nothing like it did on the model, it hangs more limp, isn't as full as in the picture. The ruffles lay awkward lol.

The style I thought I loved wound up being something I hated on myself, so it is just about finding what fits you. Oh and have you ever seen a bride that wasn't beautiful? There is just something about that day that makes everyone glow and look their best, model material if you ask me.

  • I agree with everyone, don't get too attached to any dress online/in mags. The dress you have in your siggy was my dream dress. I LOVED it, actually I still think it's gorgeous! I tried it on and it just did not look right, and it wasn't just that one, but every dress with a large skirt was just overwhelming on me (I'm only 5'2). So, while you may think you love something, I would try every style on in the store because you never know what you'll fall in love with!

I had a feeling it would be that way. I am also 5'2, so I'm sure I will look like a marshmellow in it!. Have you decided on a dress yet?
