Basic principles of eating clean?

Can anyone tell me what I'd need to know to start eating clean?  I know that it's basically eating things that are unprocessed/as close to its natural form as possible.  But what about things like yogurt, honey, any kinds of breads?

I'm sure there's a lot to it.  If you know any literature I should invest in, that's great too.

TIA!

It isn't about "eating clean" per se, but Food Matters by Mark Bittman is fantastic. It has changed the way I eat for serious, and it is totally anti-fad diet. it is just common sense about what we put in our body and it's simple effects on the earth, our health and wallets. He even includes recipes! A must read!

He advocates "Vegan Before Dinner". He only eats produce, legumes and whole grains through the day, then eats whatever he wants at dinner. I try to stick to this (though some weeks are better than others) and I love it. It is moderate enough to stick to, but makes an impact!

  • I would maybe check out cleaneatingmag.com or eatcleandiet.com (or org?). They both have good information, as well as some clean eating recipes for free.

  • There's a Clean Eating book by Tosca Reno that a lot of people like.

Clean eating is just eating things that aren't processed--so technically even yogurt would be considered "unclean."

You can lose weight by eating clean because there are a lot of foods you just have to cut out. It's healthy, but can feel restrictive. IMO the best thing is just always a healthy balance...cutting out all kinds of food can just set you up for a binge. AND, it's no fun being the only one of your friends who can't have an ice cream cone every once in awhile if you're all going out for a treat! Basically, just don't do anything extreme Wink
  • I don't necessary stick to "eating clean" but I do keep my grocery trips to the perimeter of the store. Produce, meats, milk, eggs, bread, etc. No processed foods (unless you count milk & bread?) make it into my cart.

My mom always tells me this. It's easy enough advice to follow.
