DJ or no DJ?

We're planning a low key, laid back wedding and the thought of spending almost $1000 on a DJ makes me uneasy. Has anyone had or been to a wedding where there wasn't a DJ?
Thoughts? Ways to have music without a DJ? Any feedback is appreciated!

Re: DJ or no DJ?

  • What is your budget for a DJ? A friend of mine got married and her DJ cost her about $500. She seriously recommends him too.
  • The last wedding I went to didn't have one and it came off as a little disorganized. We never knew when any of the events were happening. A DJ really keeps the reception flowing as well as plays music. Check out Melodies and Memories.
  • I second Stephiehall...FI's best friend got married a few years ago on a super-tight budget, and while their reception was by no means a disaster, it just wasn't really organized. They had an iPod and would scroll through songs (playing them for a few seconds at a time) until they decided what songs they wanted to play, they were having to basically run the reception, and just had FI making announcements - which is fine, except no one was really listening because his microphone was the same volume as the music. Honestly, a DJ is just one of those things that is actually worth the cost. If you can find an inexpensive DJ, I would definitely try to work it into your budget. If you just HAVE to go the iPod route, just make sure you plan out your playlists and speakers VERY well.
  • I agree with PP.  It isn't too hard to find a reasonably priced DJ.

  • I have been to iPod weddings and some went off well and some went off not so well.  But the same is true for the weddings I went to where there was a DJ.  DJs don't always MC or keep the flow going so if that's what you want, you should probably ask and make sure he/she will actually do that.  If you are thinking of doing the music yourself, you'll want to double-check the speakers and make sure your music files and playlists are all in order.  I have noticed that iPod weddings tend to have more technical difficulties.  Or you could also skip the music... I had a friend do that because music was not important to het at all and she still had a fun wedding.
  • Were using DJ Tommy scott and he is very reaonably priced. I think there needs to be music and a DJ helps with the flow of the evening.

  • We are just using an ipod for background music. We have an MC, though, which will help. I would only get a DJ if you plan on having dancing. Otherwise, I'd skip it.

<div>What was the name of this DJ in Dallas?</div>
  • Yea I guess we'll just have to think about it. We plan on having a low key wedding so it might not be necessary.
    Thanks for the feedback!
