How do you stay focused on the weekends?

I do really good with may cals during the week, but it's so easy for me to go over on the weekends!  I have NO will power when I'm out.  Even when I have every intention of ordering right, once I sit down and smell all the food around me, I change my mind and order something else.  So do I have to just stay home on the weekends?!?!?!  The last couple of weekends we have been home, and I've been good!  I noticed if I'm out all day long, the last thing I want to do when I get home is cook, so I've planned ahead and put something into the crockpot so I didn't have to be lazy about making something when I got home.  I've also decided to start trying new recipes on the weekends, so I get excited about eating at home.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?  How do you stay focused on the weekend?

  • I'm an endurance athlete so I do my long runs/workouts on the weekends. I'm not getting married till october 2013 but I am doing a half ironman this fall so this workout schedule already applies. I intend to do either another half ironman about 3 weeks before my wedding next year or more than likely an olympic distance triathlon a month out and a half marathon about 1-2 weeks out from the date. Itll make me stay accountable, and ease my frustrations from finals in school and last minute wedding crazies.

  • The weekends are super hard for me too and I feel your pain! Like KW said, it's about portion control, which is how I handle eating out as well. You can absolutely go out to eat but when the waiter brings the heaping plate of pasta, don't eat it all. Decide upon ordering that you are going to bring at least half home with you for lunch or dinner the next day. I find that when I have it set in my mind that half is for tomorrow, I won't eat the entire plate (not that I could anyways because I have a small appetite). If you completely deprive yourself of the foods you love then you are more likely to overindulge at some point, rather than enjoy a little bit every now and then... it's all about moderation. Sounds like you have a great mindset to maintain results and keep making strides but don't completely shut yourself off from "bad foods". Hope this helps!

  • Ashleigh one thing I do at restaurants is half the portions immediatly, sometimes I make it into thirds. I also try to opt for veggies as side dishes (partially because I have celiac partially because its better for me). By doing this and avoiding bread bowls etc it keeps what I eat pretty light. It also makes eating out more frugal allowing that $10 entre go for 2 meals rather than 1. I also ask for half portions when I can get them at restaurants. Note I will eat an entire lunch portion of pasta if I've run 10 miles in the morning or done 1 hour of swim, followed by an hour of hard cycling on a bike. At that point I'm in a caloric deficit and if I dont eat I'm going to have major issues later. I tend to try to also track my calories, and I allow a free meal a week where I just dont consider calories too much.

  • I also try to up my workout schedule on the weekends.  I find that when I put my heart and soul into a good workout, I am less likely to "throw it all away" by eating crap!  So, first thing Saturday morning, I get up and get active!  Whether it's a long run, or walking with friends, or heading to the Y's 9am Zumba class.. I am ALWAYS doing something!! This helps immensely.  Then it's all about the willpower from then on out.  Unfortunately, that's something you just have to work on.

I imagine my dress anytime I'm getting frustrating and it helps!
