Getting in Shape

Gluten Free?

Hey ladies. I haven't posted over here in awhile.... but I had a question.  Are any of you following a gluten free type diet? If so, do you have any good resources for recipes or foods to eat/not eat, etc?

Re: Gluten Free?

  • I've been following a mostly wheat free diet as of late (well through the week, I've been slipping on weekends), but other than just upping my veggie intake I've been relying on Google for some recipes.

This site looks like it's got a whole bunch of tasty looking wheat free recipes: http://www.danispies.com/

  • my sister in law switched to a gluten free diet because her son can't have gluten.  And although it's hard, she feels much better in terms of digestion and has lost weight very easily (since it's restrictive).  I've been inspired by her to cut back on gluten, not entirely, but I think it's made it easier to keep off the weight I lost before the wedding.
  • I follow a gluten free diet, but only because I have to.  I am not on it for weight loss, but because my doctor put me on it due to food allergies.  I started about five or six months ago, and found most of my information by googling "gluten free" and "celiac disease".  I was amazed at how many foods contain gluten or "additives" that have gluten in them.

There are a lot of cookbooks and online recipes for gluten free food.  You will find that you'll have to cook a lot more, because a lot of restaurants don't serve gluten free food.  You would be surprised at what contains gluten (even soy sauce!).  Crazy, huh?

  • AGriffin620- There is a AWESOME soy sauce out there that is gluten free. I can't remember the name right now....but it's my fav! My mom has has celiac disease for about 10 years and I was raised with a semi-wheat free diet.

I would recommend googling for recipes. I know that there is a great recipe for meatloaf that uses rice, not bread crumbs.

    HTH!
  • Meadow- do you have any good online resources? I've been trying to find a good "safe and not safe" list ;)  I did WW for a little while, and I think I'm spoiled because there are so many WW resources out there!
  • i dont know of any specific website for this, as most of what ive learned has been from searching for hours and hours for information. if you are looking for the basics, ive heard the gluten free bible (book) is a great resource...not sure if they have that online. otherwise, i can draft up a list of what helps me and send it to you in the next few days...

    would that help?

  • I'll have to check out the Walmart brand soy sauce.  That's pretty funny.  We do keep the gluten free Tamari in our house, as well as Braggs Amino Foods, which is very close to soy sauce (that mainly goes in our cooking).

If you ever have any questions, Steph, please let me know (you can message me).  I'm always researching, because I am a total "foodie".  I love food, so changing my diet was really tough, but the adjustment has made a world of difference in my health.  I hope it helps you, too, and that you figure out what's going on with your body!

  • I thought I might have a wheat allergy and bought a cookbook that's called "You won't believe it's gluten free" on ebay for pretty cheap.  They have a lot of baking recipes using alternative flours in case you can't seem to cope with cutting baked goods out of your diet.  She uses different types of flour to make the same recipe and then discusses how the different flours affect the end result.  I thought it was pretty cool.

  • Has anyone seen any real weight loss success by going Gluten Free? Do you feel healthier? Interesting topic!
  • My FH is vegan (not gluten free though) but one of our favorite websites is vegetariantimes.com.  You can search their thousands of recipes with a gluten free parameter.  I know you will love it.  They are the best resource out there for tons of ideas.  You can also sign up for a once weekly email of a gluten free recipe.  They also have magazine called Vegetarian Times.  If you see it in the store pick it up and look towards the back for a page with a chart.  There will be a row marked "gluten free" and any GF recipe will be checked.  Good luck!

[QUOTE]Some people, who are gluten intolerant, end up losing a ton of weight while they are eating gluten, because they can't keep the food with gluten in their system (their body refuses it).  When they cut gluten out of their diet, they start gaining their proper body weight back, because their body can finally soak up and retain the proper nutrients it needs.

  • I'm glad I saw this thread! I started eating gluten free last weekend after one of my celiac antibody tests came back positive.  I was bad and had pizza tonight for dinner though and now my stomach is KILLING me :( So if anyone has a good gluten-free pizza dough recipe I would love to have it! Bread recipes too!

I don't really know of any pizza dough or bread recipes yet, but I'm slowly learning what to use when baking.  Whole Foods has some good breads and doughs that are already made.  They also have bagels.  I'm excited, because we found this bread maker at Macy's that actually has a gluten free option button.  I hope we get it, because we are definitely registering for that one!
