Do you have a workout routine at the gym?

FI and I joined a gym a couple of weeks ago and I feel like I'm just randomly doing machines instead of a routine. I usually do 30 min cardio, a few weight machines, then another 15 or so min of cardio (usually the elliptical). I just want to lose about 15 more pounds, but I really need to tone up from losing the last almost 40. Anyone have any suggestions for what weight machines work best for toning up the stomach and arms, or want to share your gym routine?
TIA

Re: Do you have a workout routine at the gym?

  • I do have a routine but I tend to get muscle-y looking so I often can go easier on the weights and do 10-12lbs for bicep exercises, 15 lbs for kettle bell exercises, and 7.5-20lbs for over the head triceps (3-4 sets of 12 reps).  I don't typically use machines other than for leg exercises.

My question to you is:  Does your gym provide personal trainers?  If so, it might be nice to use one for a couple of times until you get comfortable with a routine.  They can also pinpoint specific machines and exercises that would help you the best AND most importantly show you how to do things properly.
  • I pretty specifically am trying NOT to have a routine so my body is always guessing what I'll do next.

If you can, have someone who works at the gym take you around and show you what the weightlifting equipment does. There should also be diagrams on each machine that shows you what muscles it targets.

Most people will tell you to target a different area of your body each time you do a session, but I personally like to hit all the major muscle groups that I like focus on (particularly my thighs and arms).

  • They do offer personal trainers. I believe you get a free 30 min with one for joining the gym. I will look into that tonight. Thanks for all the info... it's very helpful!

  • I run everyday first thing in the morning. I alternate a few days of paced distance followed by a few days of interval sprints. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings I go to an hour spin class. On Monday/Wednesday/Friday I lift. My lifting is in the mornings after my runs.

  • Rotate weights and cardio every other day. My trainer said you should never exceedd 30 min of cardio a day because after 30 min your body begins depleteing muscle instead of fat. Long distance runners have to work harder at weights to keep mass up because of this. Also look up Tabata workouts. Its a new thing at my gym we all love. I also take classes too that way I dont have to think about what im doing they just make me do it. lol This is my usual routine weekly.

hi what you said doesnt make sense. You do step and boot camp? Thats a lot of cardio. You said after 30 minutes your body burns muscle which is true. So why are you doing so much?
