Work Out Help Please

I am going to sign up at my local YMCA tonight. Wonder what kind of exercises or machines to use to get rid of my belly (looking to go from 130 to about 110-115 (i'm 5'3"). Any help appreciated!

  • Basically, you just need to burn calories in whatever way you like best.  Run, take spin classes, dance, use the elliptical, etc.  Burn more calories than you take in, and the weight will come off.

Does the Y offer personal training?  If so, it may be worth buying a few sessions just to get you started.  Once you've learned some exercises you like, you can continue on your own.

    Good luck!

<div>This!  That way you can make sure that you are doing exercises and using the machines correctly.  Once you've mastered the basics you will be fine to go on your own.  Good Luck!</div>

All of the above in regards to exercise. Make a lifestyle change with your eating habits too. Dont just "diet." There's tons of free calorie counter sites out there. I personally like my fitness pal, I know spark people is another one people seem to like. I started working out and not counting my calories and once I started counting I realized even with working out and for almost 2 months, I saw no difference in my body of weight. When I began counting my calories I realized that I wasn't burning enough calories compared to what I was eating. I really started seeing a difference once I changed my eating habits.

  • I completely agree with what everyone has said.  Any kind of cardio will burn the calories and any kind of strength training will increase your lean muscle.  Remember that muscle weighs more than fat, so even if the number on your scale doesn't change, your clothes will be looser.  Simply signing up at the Y and starting a fitness program is a great idea.  Remember: progress is action....so just start.
  • Congrats on your new commitment to fitness!  I will agree with what everyone else has said.  But, I want to add a couple of things.

Do not get discouraged if you do not see results right away.  It can take time to find a combination of eating right and working out that works for you.

Also, don't take the scale into too much consideration.  You can still be 130lbs, but wear pants that are 3 sizes smaller.  So, even if you are not losing weight, you can still be losing fat and reducing your size.

    Good luck!
