Getting in Shape

Running Music

I'm training for my first half marathon that I'll be running Memorial Day weekend.  The cardio isn't the hard part since I somehow managed to stay in decent shape over the winter, but the issue is... I get bored!  There are very few places in my neighborhood that are well lit, so when I go out at 5 AM I have to keep to specific loops (I take care of horses and ride after work, so the running has to happen in the morning).

So, what do you all listen to when you run?  Something with an upbeat tempo is key, but I'm not much of a pop girl.  For example, I've been listening to my Rob Zombie playlist on Shuffle the past few times I've gone out.  Anyone with some good indy rock / hard rock suggestions would be much appreciated!

Re: Running Music

  • I downloaded a huge collection of 90s dance songs recently. Some of the songs are too slow and some are totally cheesy, but man do I have a great time singing along.

  • I totally agree, I hate running without motivational music.  Not sure if you would like this because it definitely falls in the more "indie" category, but I love running to Vampire Weekend, specifically "A-punk" and almost all of the album "Contra".
  • I'm sorry, I didn't see you wanted indie / hard rock.

  • I won't be of huge help since my favorite work out songs are by B. Spears, but I do have some Red Hot Chili Peppers on my playlist...

  • Ooh Rob Zombie is good, Mudvayne, Chevelle.

  • Good call on the Vampire Weekend and the Mudvayne!  And don't worry Kristen, I definitely have some Michael Jackson I run to.  Actually, there's a band called Fine Young Cannibals that does a lot of harder covers of old stuff that I love for working out.  Unfortunately, Tool and Coheed & Cambria... my two favorites... have really long slow parts in some of their songs!
  • I agree. 'blast from the past' music is pretty entertaining to play.  always puts me in a good mood.
  • I love Linkin Park and Good Charlotte, both of those get me going. I also like Ke$ha, which in any other situation would drive me crazy but it keeps me moving.

I just updated my running playlist last week, so thought I might share. I listen to a little bit of everything, and like to start and end on a light note with the more forceful beats in the middle. I was really burned out on the long playlist I have had on there forever, so most of what's on here is pretty recent, or older favorites I haven't listened to in a while. Having a variety of musical styles is essential to me during a workout. Here's what I've got:

    Rootless Tree - Damien Rice
Windows are Rolled Down - Amos Lee
    When I'm Alone - Lissie
    Grenade - Bruno Mars
Next Girl - The Black Keys
F**k You - Cee Lo Green
You Found Me - The Fray
She's Your Girl - Ray Lamontagne
Planetary (Go) - My Chemical Romance
When They Come For Me - Linkin Park
    Disease - Matchbox Twenty
    DESTROYA - My Chemical Romance
Little Lion Man - Mumford and Sons
Na Na Na - My Chemical Romance
Henry Nearly Killed Me - Ray Lamontagne
    We Cry - The Script
    Hey, Soul Sister - Train
You're the World to Me - David Gray

    EDIT:
Oh, and 2/3 of the new Foo Fighters album is solid workout/running music. They went back to a more garage punk/rock sound and it is pretty fantastic.

  • I know it's not rock, but I've been listening to a lot of Scooter during my runs lately.
  • Congrats on the half marathon training! I just ran my first one last weekend that I trained all winter for.  I found the best music for long runs was a little slower than my fast paced other workout music.  I especially liked listening to: Foo Fighters, Collective Soul, Talking Heads, and Killers.  Good luck with the rest of the training- make sure to pay particular attention to hydration in the days leading up to the race.

  • Yes, congrats on your first half marathon! I ran the philly half last november, it was so great!

as far as rock music goes, my tempo always goes up with some rage against the machine! also the white stripes has some really good beats, not sure about how fast they are in terms of reaching the recommended 180 bpm, but that also gets me going!

Good luck on your race and keep up the good work! training for a half marathon alone is a wonderful accomplishiment!

  • I LOVE running to Girltalk.  The mashups are so great and keep me from getting bored.  Plus, you can download his albums for free through his website.  Just search "Girltalk" and you'll find it!

  • I don't often run with music, but when I do it's usually a bit of punk rock:
Sum 41, Blink 182 are Green Day my favourites.

Good luck with the half marathon.

  • Check out the new Bruno Mars CD...."Runaway Baby" is especially good for running. And, as much as I hate to admit it, I love running to the Twilight soundtrack- some good running music there. Good luck!
