Lost weight and ate mexican twice this week - this was how

So like many of us I'm trying to lose some weight before my wedding.  I don't have a lot to lose thankfully, but that makes each pound that much more difficult.  This week while I was at the grocery store (my local Kroger) I picked up some flour tortillas and almost put them in my basket before deciding to at least look at the nutrition facts.  Ouch!  They are really bad for you!  I've always watched what I put into my burritos, I never looked at the tortillas themselves - no wonder Mexican food makes me gain weight!

So I looked elsewhere on the shelf and realized that most of the whole wheat tortillas were pretty stiff and probably would taste like cardboard.  I'm the kind that can't diet if I have to give up all of my favorite foods.

Then I noticed there was one brand ("Ole Mexican Xtreme Wellness: High Fiber Low Carb") that looked promising, and it wasn't stiff like the other whole wheat options.  I tried them, and they were GREAT!  In fact, one tortilla has 48% of your daily fiber, but they were still flexible and edible like regular flour tortillas.  FI and I even cut them into triangles and baked them to use them instead of chips for our guacamole.  We did this twice this week, and I lost 1.2 lbs.  I was so excited I wanted to share with everybody else who can't bear to give up mexican food!

  • There's no reason to give up mexican food.  Or even flour tortillas.  You just have to be reasonable about it.  I'm glad this worked for you--but it has nothing to do with which tortillas you used, and it has everything to do with making a sensible choice.  You can still eat flour tortillas and make sensible choices.  The same can be said of cheese, sour cream, chips, and all those other "bad" Mexican food.

  • And for the record, flour tortillas aren't necessarily "really bad for you."  Should you eat 2 or 3 giant burrito sized ones on a regular basis?  No, probably not.  But that doesn't make them "bad for you."

Though people that are big on clean eating and not eating white flour will completely disagree with me.

And for the record, I don't eat white flour tortillas because I'm gluten intolerant, and I STILL don't think everyone should avoid them like the plague.

    Great tip!

Yeah, those last few lbs are often the hardest but as long as you're shooting for a realistic goal, are totally doable.  Have you checked out corn tortillas?  Great for adding some variety. I can't do the flour ones anymore thanks to a gluten issue, but I've found that quite a few brands of corn tortillas are much lower in bulk ingredients and can be just as versitile as flour.  I make "mexican pizza" just by spraying a tortilla on the bottom, topping with cheese and meat and toasting it in the oven for a few minutes, delicious chips for with salsa, tacos, enchilada type bakes, crispy sprinkles for on top of salads, and even taco cups by baking sprayed tortillas in muffin tins.

    Good Luck!

Also: J is completely right.  No food is really evil as long as you practice moderation
  • I love the Joseph's Pita and Tortillas.  They've got a ton of fiber, and they're pretty good for you too.  I use these to make enchiladas.
