Getting in Shape

New and in need of accountability

Hi everyone! I'm ready to get back into working out...I can't wait! 9 months ago I suffered a foot injury that necessitated surgery. I was finally able to have it on May 1st. While I am inno way ready to get back into running half-marathons, I can get back in the pool! Hooray! Monday is my first official work out, but 9 months of inactivity makes me afraid of becoming inconsistent! I've noticed your workout accountability threads and plan to join in, and saw people's posts about My Fitness Pal and have joined that too - screen name is the same. Looking forward to getting back in shape!

  • Hi and welcome!
    injuries can be really defeating.
Glad that you are so motivated to pump it back up! Be careful with the pool! Try not to push it too much (although I'm sure your doctor has told you what you can and can't do) because swimming works eeeverything. Do you have a gym membership, or how do you work out?

I belong to the Y, which is where the pool is. I've never had to actually have a place to work out since I am (was?) such an avid runner, with visits to the yoga studio mixed in. Now that I need to tread lightly - literally, I'm going to have to get creative with the equipment at the Y. So pool workouts for now, I can start walking my dog again in 4 weeks and light jogging in 8.

  • awesome!
You'll find plenty of things to play with. The rowing machine is great because it's cardio-based but more upper body. You will still be able to do core/ab work and back/shoulder/arms. That's plenty to keep you busy while you're healing. You'll have one sexy back by the time you can run again ;)
  • I broke my leg last summer because I literally loved running too much. I reccomend a pool running belt, and doing deep water running. You'll want the water to be about 6 feet deep for this but it is great. There is absolutely no impact! Swimming laps is also great, but depending on what you did to your foot it might not feel great. When I broke my foot 2.5 years ago I couldnt swim because it agitated the foot. Are you able to do recumbent bike yet? Typically when they release you for the pool they'll allow recumbent bike and sometimes rowing. I'm an advocate of both of these.I made it through the broken leg by swimming, and pool running. I then progressed to recumbent cycling, then rowing.
