Getting in Shape

stressing about trip

So, I'm going to the East Coast for my bachelorette party and shower (I'm from Philly). I'm going to be there for 6 days, and last time I was there for 5, I gained a good 5 lbs. Well, I'm in full slim down mode for my wedding which is 4 months away! 3 monhts at the time of the trip.

I'm using MFP, and I've been attempting to lose slowly, .5 lbs per week. I'm considering making it more like 1lb a week until the trip. To give myself a little buffer. I still have 5lbs to lose. I eat healthfully and work out. I'm just really nervous about the trip, because I know that I won't be making good food choices (the food is freaking amazing!!!) and I won't have access to a gym.

Help me. Will attempting to lose more this next month, to creat a little buffer screw my metabolism up?

Re: stressing about trip

  • while you're away.... try to eat HALF of all your meals... Or try to NOT finish the meals, even though they are amazingly tasty!

Also, while you're away... maybe wake up realyl early and go on a fast walk outside. I'm sure someone will want to help you with exercise while you're there. I know that a few of my friends would help me out...

Although my moh isn't very helpful!!! lol.

    Good luck! :)

  • Another thing to keep in mind - to gain 5 pounds in 5 days, you would have needed to eat an EXCESS of 3500 calories a day. That's a lot. So while it may seem like you gained 5 pounds, it was probably a lot of water retention.
While you're away, I would pay attention to what you're eating, and try not to indulge too much at every meal. And drink plenty of water.

  • Thank you ladies...... I'll definitely take some of your suggestions. I don't think anybody will be helpful keeping me on track, so I'll have to take ownership. Maybe I'll bring my 30DS dvd.... but I'm  not sure my grandmom has a DVD player. I'll talk to her about it!

I think this is very true. And while you should still be mindful of what you're eating (like don't get dessert after every meal, etc) you should also have fun and enjoy yourself!! Don't be a debbie downer for your friends and constantly talk about how bad you're eating, how you regret it, make them watch you exercise, etc.

  • Trip weight is the easiest weight to lose. Last year, I went to NOLA for a week. Gained 10 pounds and after returning to my normal diet and exercise routine it "disappeared" within a week.

I wouldn't stress too much. Stress affects weight loss. ;)
  • Lmark- Thanks for the advice. That will be the biggest thing. No DESSERT after EVERY meal, but the night of the bachelorette party and at the shower, I will have dessert :-) It would just be rude not to! ;)

Ash- Good to hear!!!! Hopefully it's as easy for me IF I do gain. I love New Orleans, btw. They have amazing good. Hello- beignets!

Again, to gain a pound you need to eat an excess of 3500 calories. You're saying you ate an extra 35 THOUSAND calories in one week. I guarantee you that while you were probably bloated and full of water weight, you DID NOT gain 10 pounds of fat in a week.

I never said it was 10 lbs of fat. I'm just saying it is easy to gain and lose trip weight. Even if it is only water weight it is showing up on the scale, and clothes are tighter. She probably won't gain 10 lbs of fat, but she may gain water weight. I'm simply saying don't stress about it.
  • I just got back from a trip and I gave myself a "Break" from my diet too.  I gained 1 lb from a 6 day break and had great food too!  Here were some things that I found helped:
    - I got up a little early (9am, haha) two days and went for a nice, long run.
    - I walked everywhere (Try staying right in town, or just getting dropped off in town for the day and walk, walk, walk!).
    - I made my own super healthy breakfast, then let myself eat out for lunch and dinner.
    - No desert for lunch and only water during the day.
    - no 3 am "is it breakfast or dinner" meals after the parties.

Even with all these things, my vacation was great and I ate a tone of food.  I really think the walking everywhere in town helped the most.  Good luck!
