Getting in Shape

Monday Newbie

Hi everyone!  I've been lurking here for a while looking for ways to help support FI.  He wants/needs to loose about 20 pounds.  I also generally want to be healthier, so the accountablity threads have been great.  Greek yogurt was the best find!

FI doesn't like to exercise alone, so I told him I'd exercise with him.  We started the Biggest Loser Last Chance DVD on Saturday.  I didn't finish because I backed into the couch and banged my heel.  Even though I didn't even do the full workout, by calf muscles are incredibly sore.  It's been two days now, and it still hurts to stand up (from sitting) and walk.  What can I do to prevent this in the future?  Also, should I continue pushing, even though I'm already sore, or should I wait until I feel better?  (FI and I both took yesterday off.)

I don't know if this helps, but this summer I did the C25K program.  At first I was a little sore, but never anywhere close to this bad.  Otherwise, I don't really exercise besides walking the dog, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, and that sort of thing.

Re: Monday Newbie

  • Welcome!

Starting a new exercise will almost always leave you sore.  Muscle soreness that lingers for a few days is nothing to worry about, as long as it's just the DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and not sharp and stabby.

Sometimes when I'm particularly sore, I'll take 2 days off, but I find that just getting up and moving again helps with the soreness.  I've had some really great workouts where going in I had muscle soreness.

Make sure, too, that you're stretching and getting plenty of water.  And allowing yourself rest days.

  • I am going to 2nd raynes suggestion about stretching. I hate the post workout stretches in Jillian Michaels No More Trouble Zones and was sooo sore the first couple of times I did the video. When I stopped doing her stretching sequence and took my time stretching on my own, I noticed such a difference and most of the pain went away. Worth a try :) Good luck!
