Getting in Shape

Only THREE WEEKS. Help!

Hi!

Today is the THREE WEEK mark! I'm so excited, but I need to drop some weight! I'm not looking to drop a ton of weight in these last few weeks, but my tummy has gotten a little bigger/bloated recently. I've been working 2 jobs (until this week - now I'm down to one), so I haven't had time to exercise. Plus, since the wedding is close, it seems like people want to go out to eat to "treat me" more often. I never eat a full portion, but then I have so many leftovers in the fridge that I should be avoiding.

Now that I have some free time since I'm down to one job, I need to get back to the gym at my apartment. I just have this stupid fear of people judging me while I'm in there!! How do I get over that?

Also, would protein shakes help with weight loss? When should I use them/what kind, if yes?

Has anyone heard of the 4 hour body - if so, how do you stay on track and not go bananas? We bought the book and tried it for a couple days several months ago and I was so crabby (so was he). He lost 4lbs in like 2 days and I think I lost the same, but it showed up a couple days after.

I also have the Jillian Michels 30-day shred dvd, but I don't have the heart to do it in the apartment because I dont' want to disturb the people below us - this apartment is not sound resistant AT ALL. I also have a yoga DVD...should I do that?

Advice???

Re: Only THREE WEEKS. Help!

  • Does your dress have room in it for you to lose weight? I wouldn't want to do anything so close to the wedding that might make your dress not fit properly!

If that's not an issue - I would focus more on your eating over the next 3 weeks than exercising (don't get me wrong - exercise is important for much more than weight loss) but the way you eat is what is going to help the most with bloating in my opinion. Make sure to drink lots of water and try to eat as cleanly as possible, limit sodium, etc.

    Good luck! :)

The best advice I can think of is to exercise to reduce stress....eat healthy....and relax. I was going through something similar to this (I am at the three months away mark) and my best friend went through this very thing when she got married.

Most of my fear (and hers) was just panic setting in (from the big day itself).  Feeling like you are not as thin/fit as you want to be is counter-productive. Exercise to feel good and it will make a big difference. You will feel good, stress free, your complexion will be glowing and you can concentrate on being excited rather than stressed.

When I calmed down a bit and let go of that pressure I started to feel immensely better. Right now, it is important to feel good about yourself. Maybe, if you let go of those pressures and worked out just because you have the available time and extra energy you won't be stressed about going to the gym. I totally understand worring about judgment at the gym. To get myselt to go I started to try and remember that I was there too…..with these people who I was so concerned were judging me…..which meant they had no reason to judge me.

If I was pouting at the door with an ice cream cone whining about how badly I wanted to be thin…..then yes people are in the position to judge. But, if I’m on the treadmill sweating through my shirt, hair matted in a ponytail and without a stitch of makeup…..even the pretty supermodel and I have something in common. WE ARE BOTH working on a better us. And, if that supermodel is judging at that point than she must be jealous of something….because despite what many differences there are between us….we are on the same playing field.

Work out for fun. When you catch yourself stressing….exercise through it. As far as protein shakes…I don’t know. It’s been awhile since I did that. But, I did the Special K 2 week challenge awhile ago and found the results very substantial. There is an amazing smootie called the Skinny Monster that is very filling, tasty and healthy. Here is the recipe:

This site is also filled with recipes that are healthy and low fat.

Good Luck! You will be a beautiful bride no matter what because you will be surrounded by all your loved ones....marrying your true love......whats not beautiful about that??!!!!Smile

<div>I do have a little room in my dress to lose some weight - not a lot, but a little would make me feel more comfortable. I think you are right - I need to focus on what I eat...I've noticed that a lot of the foods I've eaten lately are high in sodium (I actually mentioned that to my fiance last week). Thanks for your response!!</div>

  •  I just have this stupid fear of people judging me while I'm in there!! How do I get over that?
Just get over it. I don't like being looked at either, but I'm not about to go hit the gym with an eff-ton of make up on either. You are there to better yourself, just like other people in there. It's the people NOT at the gym that you should be judging ;) When I'm at the gym I'm being a narcissist. I don't give a crap who else is in there, I care about perfecting my own form/technique, busting my butt, etc. No one goes to the gym to just sit and judge.

Also, would protein shakes help with weight loss? When should I use them/what kind, if yes?
No. They help with weight loss as much as a lean protein would help with weight loss.. Making good food choices helps, but there is no magical food.  If you want to go with the protein shake, be aware of how many cal/far are in them and how much it become when you add juice/milk to it. Also, be aware that many protein shakes have artificial sweeteners in them (usually splenda, sometimes stevia).  These types of things confuse your bod and have the potential to slow your metabolism. if you want to go protein shake, get 100% PURE whey powder, and flavor it yourself.
Protein aids in fueling your muscles and healing them when all the lactic acid is secreating (ie, post-workout). If you want to go this route, you really only need it on the days you are lifting HEAVY weights, just like you only NEED things like gatorade on days you are kicking som serious cardio as$ (which isn't often.. maybe if you're playing a 3 hour soccer game or something..)
Ultimately, natural foods like nuts, lean meats, etc will always be a better source of protein.

I also have the Jillian Michels 30-day shred dvd, but I don't have the heart to do it in the apartment because I dont' want to disturb the people below us - this apartment is not sound resistant AT ALL. I also have a yoga DVD...should I do that?
Then what made you buy it? If you want to do it, you can run down to your neighboors and ask when would be the best time (ie, when are they not usually home) so that you don't disturb them. If anything, they will be thankful that you are trying to be considerate.
    Yoga is fantastic.
It won't make you burn fat, but it'll relax you, which all brides need, help your flexibility, and help improve your balance. Those are improtant aspects of fitness that many people forget.

<div>Thanks for the advice - as for the 30 Day Shred DVD, I bought it when I was living in my parents' basement, so it wasn't an issue there. </div>

  • aww I see.
Some things to be aware of:
When you build up your muscle, you retain water for a few days (even a week) so the week before your wedding I would cut out any heavy lifting and stick to low impact cardio with yoga for relaxation.

google salty and bloaty foods! One food I didn't realize is FANTASTIC for you (one of my faves) but CRAZY bloats you is Broccoli! Each the good foods like that for the next two weeks, but cut them out on that last week before your wedding.

Overall don't eat to late, eat non-processed stuffs, stick to probiotics (yogurt in the morning, etc) and cut the sugars as much as possible. Even if you don't LOSE weight you will FEEL like you did because your body will be feeling great from a great diet.
    GL !
  • Drink lots of water, and green tea. Limit salt, and sugar. Pilates will help your belly immensly in 3 weeks. Get a video and seriously try it. I swear by pilates its kept me out of pt several times and always helps. You wont lose weight with it per say but it will train your core to hold itself better. Things wont be perfect in 3 weeks but it will help tremendously if you do it 3-5 days a week.
