Getting in Shape

GF/low carb folks, talk to me about low blood sugar.

Since going (mostly) gluten free, I've found myself dealing with more and more frequent bouts of hypoglycemia.  I eat a good amount of fruits and veggies (usually anywhere from 5-10 servings a day).  I don't eat many "replacement" GF foods, and tend to stick to things that are naturally GF, so it's not unusual for my carbs to be below 150g a day.

I've started carrying Larabars, nuts, and fruit with me constantly.  I try to eat smaller meals more frequently, but with my work schedule, that's often pretty impossible.  I have a physical scheduled for the beginning of May, and I have every intention of talking to my doctor about it then--but in the meantime, has anyone experienced this, and do you have any suggestions besides what I'm already doing to help keep the shakes at bay?  I get very shaky, dizzy, get a headache, feel like I might pass out, and get very irritable if I don't eat every few hours.  It comes out of nowhere a lot--I often feel this way before I feel physically hungry.  I've come so far working on only eating when I'm hungry, and I'm struggling with feeling like I have to eat on a "schedule" to avoid feeling like death.

I don't have any legit research or anything to back me up but I get that crummy down feeling and definitely become a major crankypants.  My go-to foods are a spoonful of PB or yogurt with berries if at home, a Babybel cheese or smokehouse almonds if at school or out.  They're the only not crap food I've found that nips it pretty quick and gets my blood pumping high octane again.

Yeah, I keep a container of PB at work, and a tin of almonds and cashews in my car.  The nuts are definitely the most helpful.  It just sucks because if I get caught up in what I'm doing (happens at work a lot), I find myself suddenly crashing hard.

  • Oh, and Anna?  I know you probably make your own macaroons because you're amazing, but if you don't, Mrs Crumble's GF ones are awesome.

I'll have to look for those.  My market will order in any GF foods i request.  Thank goodness for good local businesses.  The Tree of Life ones are pretty darn tasty though.  I like all their cookies.

No, it is a serious problem!  My trainer put me on this very strict diet and I was having the same problems.  I took my blood sugar with my grandma's diabetes blood tester a few times and it was crazy low!  I ended up switching off the low carb diet and am just doing weight watchers now.
  • Yeah, unfortunately it's not really an option for me to start eating gluten.
