Getting in Shape

Lurker, now need some help!

Hi everyone! I've been lurking for a bit, but no one seems to have asked this particular question. Sorry if it's a repeat after all!!

FI and I decided that we should get in shape together, not just for the wedding, but in general. We spent all the warm weather jogging together, and it was actually really great. But now that it's cold and usually wet outside, we can't come up with a good workout to do together.

He did P90x last winter, but I found it totally annoying and useless. He didn't do the really intense version, just the videos. Since we are pretty much at our weight goals (less than 5 lbs each to go!!), I'm really more interested in something that will help us tone a bit and keep up our stamina etc. Maybe pilates or zumba!

I would love any ideas of videos we could try. At the very least, I want to be able to do my own pilates/zumba type workout while FI does his P90x. We both have wireless headphones, so we could make it work. I'm just lost trying to find a good video on my own!!

  • I have be using the Gliding Sliding Program and loving it

    http://www.glidingdiscs.com/default.php

It's low impact, which is what I love and easy to use at home. It was only $25.00 for the program and I able to get at least 20 minutes a day.

Plus, I also go to my local rec center at least twice a week. It's good to get out of the house and do different things

    Good LuckSmile

I always say this but I loved using my On Demand option at home to get free workouts.  I tried a bunch of different types and some were great, some were "meh."  IF you can do this I'd recommend it so you can try before you buy.  Also, Jillian Michaels is pretty popular on this board and she has a lot of workout videos.

Omg, I 2nd Jillian Michael's. there's this one on demand that's for your gluts and it's a killer workout routine. I love her.

Right now we're doing Insanity though. I didn't really like P90, it was such a downer, no motivation, too mellow.
  • If you're willing to make the investment, crossfit can be really fun.  FI and I go together most nights, and we always get a killer workout.  It's pricey, but a lot of places will give a discount to a spouse (for example, I pay $175 per month for unlimited workouts and he pays $99, so it ends up being just under $140 each per month).  It's still about $60-80 more per month than most gyms, but there is a ton of individualized attention and coaching (if you find the right smaller crossfit gym it can be an awesome way to get a near-personal training session for a fraction of the price).

FI also run together--we are similar paces for relaxed runs but different for harder workouts, but we are usually able to compromise enough where we can run with each other.  Having us both committ to running makes it a lot easier to get out there and get it done.  This past fall we signed up for a 200 mile relay together, and it forced us to get out there and run for an hour a day for training, and we recently signed up for a marathon next May, which will force us to get out there and train all winter.  If only one of us were signed up, it would be a lot tougher I think.

If neither of the above appeal to you, you can always incorporate crossfit style workouts at home: burpees, air squats, pushups, situps, kettlebell swings, goblet squats, kettlebell snatch, etc. These exercises can be great for toning up, and can be done with very minimal equipment (i.e. your own body weight and a kettlebell).  We also like to do what we call the "William Wallace Workout" (I think its called that because Mel Gibson was a total beast playing William Wallace in Braveheart)--all you need is a deck of cards.  Shuffle the deck, sort into 4 piles, put one pile on each corner of a square approx. 25meters x 25 meters.  Assign an exercise (or two) to each corner: i.e. situps or air squats at 1, pushups or plank at another, air squats or lunges at another, and burpees at another.  Sprint between each corner, flip over the card.  Red 10 would mean 10 situps, black 10 would mean 10 air squats.  It keeps the workout varied, and its very easy to do with a partner.  A full deck of cards can take up to 30 minutes, so you get a pretty solid workout and have a lot of good toning exercises in there.

    I wrote a novel--my apologies--guess I;m just on my post-workout high :)
  • Thanks everyone!! Glad I have some options to show FI when he's back from Sweden :/
