*erinverble* (and everyone) Food that keep you satisfied

Erinverble just started on our board and said "  I am having a difficult time keeping things in the house that keep me satisfied. "

Lets talk food.  What keeps all of you guys truly satisfied during the day?

I know I have lots of snack foods that are delicious that while not exceptionally filling, I consider them freebies.  if I'm hungry i eat them.  I eat 3 decent meals a day and then at least 3 snacks ;)   Very few of my non dinner meals keep me full for more than a few hours.  i'm always eating.

*1 C of cubed melon
*1 C of sugar free jello
*a handful of nuts
*string cheese
*beef jerky (I make my own with less salt/sugar)
*popcorn
*a ghiradelli dark chocolate single
*1/2 C cottage cheese
*PB and apples

Re: *erinverble* (and everyone) Food that keep you satisfied

  • - 1/4 c cottage cheese mixed with 1/4 c greek yogurt topped with berries
    - celery and peanut butter (sometimes with raisins)
    - almonds and craisins
    - oatmeal with almond milk
    - protein smoothie
  • I feel the same way, Anna - always eating.

What's keeping my belly satisfied these days -
    almonds
    apples with peanut butter
greek yogurt with homemade granola (we make about 2 weeks worth at one time)
    milk with chocolate whey protein

    Anniversary
  • Hmm.. My breakfast ALWAYS satisfies me. Always. It is filling and I don't feel the need to eat again for about 3 - 4 hours. It's oatmeal (1/3 cup when uncooked, made with skim milk) and 3/4 cup greek yogurt with honey & cinnamon. And a 250mL glass of OJ. I cannot eat a breakfast that just has ONE item. Like, just oatmeal, or just yogurt. For some reason, even if it's a larger quantity, it is not satisfying to me. And I'm with Kw on the cereal with milk thing - I am hungry like 20 minutes after eating that!

    What I snack on:

    Oranges.. I love oranges.
Granola Bars (I like fiber one, but this is not a "clean" food)
Clif Bars (but only if you have a lot of calorie room, because these are about 250 calories - but 10g protein and 5g fiber - also these can be pricey so I only buy them on sale)
Dry Crispix if I'm feeling munchy (1 cup is only 110 calories)
Broccoli & peppers with tzatziki or hummus
1 slice 100% whole wheat toast with PB
Cottage cheese (but watch the sodium)
    Popcorn (light or air-popped)

I drink LOTS of water too. Sometimes I know I am really just thirsty when my mind is telling me I am hungry.

Good luck! I love finding out what everyone eats :) Gives such good ideas.

  • To add a few that haven't already been said

-Radishes! I love them. I eat them with just a bit of salt all the time.

Okay I guess that's all I can think of right now haha. I'm HUGE into popcorn, greek yogurt and green tea.

  • One of my current favorite things is avocado toast.  It's really just whole wheat toast with mashed avocado, lime juice, salt, and red pepper flakes.  The amount of avocado varies depending on whether it's breakfast (1/2 avocado) or snack (1/4 avocado).

Tomato and cucumber salad: cherry/grape tomaotes, chuncks of cucumbers, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper

Frozen grapes.  I can't eat them quickly since they're cold, which helps keep me from eating too many at once.

I make flaxseed muffins and 1 keeps me full for hours.

  • What's really helping me lately more than anything is making sure I never get to the point where I feel like i'm "starving". I keep granola bars and protein bars stashed in my desk at work, in my car and we have a ton of them at my apartment. I love the variety that is offered with different kinds of granola bars and you have the ability to eat within a wide range of calories (from 90 cals to 260ish cals etc.). On a day I'm going to be working out I tend to eat the higher cal bars, on a non-workout day I will tend to grab a lower cal option.

I know this isn't necessarily a HEALTHY option, but I also love teddy grahams. The fact that 1 serving is 24 of those little suckers really makes me feel like i'm indulging and mentally fills me up because of the QTY. It satisfies my sweet tooth without being too sugary.

I also love love love eating laughing cow cheese with pretty much anything that can be used as a dipping implement (love pretzels with it).

    YUM!!

    Totally agree!
    - apple or bananna with PB or 1 oz full fat cheese (the fat will really help subdue your cravings and the fiber from the apple will help you stay full)
-steel cut oats (more of a whole grain than regular quick oats) with blueberries and a little brown sugar
    - turkey slices with hummus and carrots (love the roasted red pepper or the artichoke)
    -  P90X protien bars (SO tasty plus there are more grams of protien than sugar which is important)
    - almonds and walnuts
    - greek yogurt (even if you buy the stuff with flavorings it has less sugar and more protien than regular yogurt)

Yummm you have most of my favs listed already!

    Definitely Hard Boiled Eggs
Hummus with carrots or red peppers
Peanut butter on an apple or banana
Cherries! They aren't easy to eat so I find they keep me satisfied because I work for them!
Pistachios- same idea as cherries, you work for the treat!
1/2 Whole wheat english muffin with Peanut butter
    Granola bar
  • Ditto on the always eating thing....I never really feel satisfied all the way, hard to do that netting 1200 calories a day!

I love, love, love eating fruit. Every week I try and buy different fruit to snack on. Lately it's been one of the following:
    *bananas
    *blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries
    *mango
    *watermelon
    *empire apples
    *peaches
    *nectarines

It doesn't exactly fill me up, but I am always looking forward to my fruit snack of the day.

Sometimes if I am like 100 calories short for the day I will like eat a teaspoon of peanut butter. I am obsessed with peanut butter and would probably eat it with every meal if I could. I always look forward to that too.

I was having a lot of trouble with breakfast that would last. Agree with PP - cereal does NOT cut it! I usually do a whole wheat english muffin with peanut butter on it. This morning I changed it up and did a thin film of Nutella, cream cheese, and strawberry slices piled on.

Oh my goodness it tasted like dessert and I'm still pretty satisfied, even without my usual cream-heavy coffee this morning.

I snack like Anna - my freebies are fruit, fruit, and more fruit! I also keep a pistachio stash. (say that 3 times fast!)
    -popcorn
    -frozen mango chunks
    -apple/ cheese

I like pasta topped with a meat for a hearty lunch. (small portions!)

ETA: paragraphs and other snack ideas.

  • most of mine have been listed,

lara bars are awesome! expensive but awesome and GF!
like maribeth, peanut butter is my total weakness-I can and do eat it by the spoonful!
I used to eat the same breakfast as sarah but I cant find affordable certified GF oats  :(
but I agree it totally fills you up for the entire morning!
I like to keep portioned trail mix packs in my desk if I feel like nibbling.
if I can find it I love GF low sodium jerkey too!

this post is making me soooo hungry

  • I do alot of those already listed. I agree - a whole grain cereal with yogurt instead of milk is usually a great breakfast for me. Doing plain oatmeal with a banana as a sweetner and some cinnamon works also.

Some that have not been listed:

    - Mint tea I find helps squash sweet cravings or is helpful if I am feeling unsatisfied right after lunch. If I really want something sweet I add 1 packet of sugar to this instead of hitting the office candy jar. Still less calories and lasts alot longer

-Popchips. If you don't know, these are popped potato chips. 120 cal and 4 grams fat for a serving of 23 chips. I find them about as satisfying as a regular chip, but they are way healthier. Kind of expensive, but cheaper if you sign up for ongoing delivery by the case on Amazon.com. A co-worker and I get a case to split every 3 months. Nice to make a soup or salad lunch more satisfying

-Garden Fresh - Last Summer I lost some weight (gained it back this Winter), by having a garden. You get exercise points for tending it and the homegrown tomatoes and peppers tasted better and made my salads more satisfying. It's not to late to plant some stuff even if you only have room for a pot or two.
