Too Much Water?

I was wondering if drinking too much water could be making me thirsty.  I feel thirsty most of the time.  I drink a glass (2 cups) when I first wake up.  At work, I drink about 1 sports bottle (4 cups) worth of water, go home for lunch refill and drink another sports bottle before I go home.  I drink another sports bottle while working out.  Then I drink another glass of water before bed.  That is about 16 cups of water in a day when the recommended is 8 cups.  I don't think I have diabetes since I have a very normal BMI (23.3).  I also work out somewhere between 1/2 hour 3-5 days a week and 1.5 hours 1-2 days a week. Just wondering if anyone might know.

Re: Too Much Water?

  • In my experience, the more water I drink, the more water I want to drink.  If that makes sense.

It's pretty hard to drink too much water, at least from a lethality standpoint.

The book/program that I'm following right now suggest that you drink half your body weight in oz per day of water.

So, for me at 175 lbs, I should drink 88 oz, or 2.6L, or about 11 cups (as in 250 mL or 8 oz).  I keep at 750 mL bottle at my desk and aim to get at least 3 in while I'm at work (so 9 cups) and then drink water as I want to when I'm at home in the evening.

The recommended 8 cups isn't really a scientific number and for most people probably isn't enough.  Many resources say that you should drink the amount of water required to make your pee nearly clear.

So, I wouldn't be worried that you're drinking too much water!

  • You may still want to mention this to your doctor. Diabetes isn't the only thing that makes you thirsty! Probably it is just your body needing more water than the average, but it never hurts to be sure.
  • Yeah, a trip to the doctor cant hurt - you could have diabetes insipidus - which is completely unrelated to type 1 and type 2 diabetes which most of us are familiar with.  Diabetes Insipidus is charactised by excessive urination and extreme thirst.  Basically (because its much more indepth than this) it is caused by a disruption of your ADH hormone production and therefore you body has troubles regulating its body fluids.

I do not think you are drinking too much water, but if thisa change in your normal behavior - then bring it up to your local doctor and they will be able to run any tests to atleast rule out a condition like this.

  • If you are worried about the drinking too much water go to the doctor. Diabetes isn't the only thing that makes you thirsty. If your thyroid is out of whack that is one of the FIRST things that you may notice. Also, issues with your hair and fingernails (being dry, brittle etc) too. Or maybe you are eating too much salt? I know it can come in weird places so look at your diet and see just how much you are eating.

  • A few people in posts above have said that because there weight was in the healthy range and is low that they didn't think it could be diabetes. Id just like to say that not all diabetes are cause because people are obese. Some people are born with it and some just get it randomly. Not that im saying i think anyone has diabetes based on one discussion. Just be aware that it could happen to anyone.

  • I am drinking way too much water but my nurse told me that I should because I am currently breastfeeding and pumping. But maybe you should see a dr.
