Getting in Shape

wedding dress back fat

Hi everyone!

I've been diligently working the past 8 months to lost weight and I'm happy to say I've lost 20 pounds! However...I had my first dress fitting last night and after researching what is generally "accepted" as an okay amount of back fat for your wedding, I'm nowhere NEAR where I need to be!

I have no problems asking the seamstress to let the dress out a bit. I don't feel I'm very heavy, not skinny, but not heavy either. The only problem is they keep telling me how beautiful it is and how perfect it fits me. But I'm self-conscious about how it looks. I'm afraid they won't listen.

I know..it's my dress and I'm paying THEM, so fight them. And I know, I'll be a beautiful bride, yada yada yada. I'm tired of hearing the same two things!

Suggestions that will HELP please ladies!!!

  • Thank you ladies! I just did a google search and it came up on "yahoo answers" and the general concencus was that it looks really, REALLY bad! I think I will stick to my guns and just have them let it out if need be! I've worked really hard to lose the weight I've lost and I don't want to let any leftover insecurities ruin how I feel on my special day!

  • Is there a way to alter the shape of the back at all so that you don't see any back fat? I haven't got to alterations yet, but when I was trying on my dress they told me that making the back dip a little bit lower makes it not squeeze right around where you get back fat, and it doesn't make it a super low cut back or anything...it just dips slightly. I can't really describe it well, haha sorry!
I don't know if that would work on your dress though, not knowing the style. I'd just look for pictures of dresses with lower backs and see if that might work on yours.

LOL where on earth would you find that sort of information? Not trying to poke fun but it's just a really funny thing to find information on what's accepted or not.

Anyway is it possible that you may be the only one who notices the back fat? If not then I'd get the dress let out a little to prevent the "squishing" effect. Also what PP said.

  • ILTR- You aren't poking fun... I am curious as to where you would find that sort of thing as well.  I didn't know that there was an "accepted amount."

I'm also not sure what you are asking, an altering question or a GIS for back fat?  I would listen to what they suggest and I'm sure you look wonderful in it anyways :)
  • Ditto PPs...

Down to basics: If you are proud of the work you have put in, you should get to be equally proud of the way the dress looks. Have them take it out or go somewhere else that will. You deserve it!

  • I would def. let the dress out some if I were you. While it's pretty common now adays to see brides with back fat as strapless dresses are becoming more popular, it's still not flattering. I also suggest that you wear a veil, it might disguise your back, just a thought. Whatever you do, don't get down on yourself about it, you've been trying to lose weight, so that's all you can do really. Hope that helps!
  • I have been doing 25 of these reverse push-up things and they have been working. Just face the opposite way of a chair, put your hands on the edge and do 25 dips a day. They have actually been working for me. And it doesn't take long out of the day at all.
  • First let me say congrats on 20 lbs!  Tha's awesome.  In regards to "Wedding Back Fat", I am worried about the same problem.  Thing is I got told something by the salewomen  at the dress shop and it was that a good seamstress know how to make your dress perfect for your body.  So I keep that in mind when I have to go have alterations done in April.  Hope that can shed some light, good luck to you!
