Getting in Shape

Motivation destroyed

I posted a few days ago that I started doing 30ds after not exercising for about 3 months, basically since the wedding, due to school & work schedule. I felt so awful after such a "poor performing" day 1 that I have really been starting to make excuses/reasons as to why I can't workout.

Anyone gone through this? How do I get over it & get myself going?

Re: Motivation destroyed

  • Just know that it will get better if you keep going.  It will get worse if you don't.  Maybe hold off the 30DS and rebuild some cardio and muscle by doing some other things first so that you can give it another go when you haven't taken a total break for 3 months.

Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
  • I still struggle with this sometimes. I'm lying, most of the time not just sometimes! I keep telling myself that things will just keep getting worse and wider if I don't do something or anything. I am trying to work back into working out 5 times a week so that I can lose weight and tone. Just try to do anything, even if it is just ten mins! Good luck!
  • I would recommend starting a physical activity that you find fun. Really, does it matter if you're doing a specific workout, as long as you're moving and burning calories? I discovered that there are lots of workout videos on the On Demand section of my cable service. I love the dance videos and end up working out for an hour without even knowing it--and results are showing!
  • I don't know where I heard this, maybe on here?  Think about this.  I have never regretted exercising after it's done.  How many times have you regretted not exercising?

Sometimes when I have no motivation, I'll tell myself, just do 10 minutes.  If you feel ok, then you can keep going.  If your really want to stop after 10, then stop.  10 minutes is better than nothing.  But, most likely, you'll keep going.  Getting off the couch is the hard part, once you're exercising it's not so bad.
  • Make small goals and reward yourself for accomplishing them.  Maybe even use a pre-school type star chart.  If you exercise x-days this month you will reward yourself in x way.  It totally works!

Also try to get a running buddy or fitness class buddy.  I used to run with one of my BMs once a week and part of my motivation for exercising on the days we weren't doing it together is I knew she was working in the interim and I didn't want to be totally out of it the next time we met up.

Last suggestion for when you don't have a buddy is to get a totally awesome playlist that really pumps you up and vary the songs so that you have both low and high intensity.  If you can keep up a faster pace during slower songs (when you could be walking) give yourself bonus points!  You could also consider listening to podcasts or books on type so you can be distracted and time goes faster.

    Good luck!
  • start slower and find a work out buddy. It really helps. On those days that you don't want to get up and do it they will! Even a dog can be really helpful for it.  If you like to dance try Zumba, there are so many things that you can do. Just find one that you really like! Set a goal. Maybe to participate in a race for the cure. You will feel good about what you are doing it for and you don't have to run the entire way!
  • i would start of slow and maybe if there's someone you know that exercises a lot maybe you can exercise with them so you have someone to push you
  • Thanks so much ladies!

I finally got myself to give it another chance & felt so much better than day 1. I still barely made through the whole workout but I definitely felt better than last time. I think that really helped boost me a little. I'm looking forward to doing it again today!  :-)
