Getting in Shape

I'm gaining muscle, but not feeling like I'm losing inches/fat

Help!!

I've only been doing the hardcore workout/watching my diet thing for about a week and a half (1-2 miles of cardio each day + P90X yoga or different strength training). I am noticeably stronger and have more muscle, but I have lost no weight and feel like I am the same size all around. I haven't gotten a tape to measure, which I wish I would have before I started this because I'm starting to get pretty bummed out. I FEEL better, but I look no different. I just don't know what else to do.

Has anyone else had this problem? What am I doing wrong? What ELSE can I do?

  • It takes TIME for your body to process these changes. Just be patient and you'll notice a difference soon enough. Some people say it takes 1-2 months to really SEE a difference. Just stick with it and know you're doing the right thing for your body :)

  • Ditto PP.  Also, I think you will notice less difference in your body because you see it every day than other people will.  And I think we, as women, tend to have those blinders on that don't allow us to see the positive changes, where we still have those glasses on that say, you're the same size you always hated.  Even when that is not true.  I lost about 20 pounds my senior year in high school (many years ago!), and there are days where I still see myself through the eyes of that teenager that was overweight.

Chin up, and way to go!  Good job making those healthy choices!

  • You guys are right. I need to quit thinking in such an "instant gratification" way.

  • It takes about 3 months to see a noticable difference :o)

It takes time to see these changes. You said you're watching your diet, but are you counting calories? That's the most important thing to do to lose weight. Try to find out your Basal Metabolic Rate and create a 500 calorie per day deficit, by cutting 250 calories in your diet and burning 250 by exercise. 3500 calories = 1 pound (most of the time! Unfortunately our body doesn't always work this way).

    Good luck!!

  • Also, you said you notice you are feeling better, stronger.  After only a week and a half, that's a HUGE deal.  It takes time for your outer appearance to catch up, but do NOT discount the success that feeling better is.  So though you haven't noticed any visual instant gratification, if you are already feeling better, then just imagine how good you'll look when you keep going.
