I'm Bored, so Let's Learn More about You

I have a few things I could be doing to finish my workday here, but I'd rather procrastinate and worry about that tomorrow.
It was only after I thought of doing this that I realized Firsttimer's awesome idea for Q&A Tuesday was, well, a Tuesday.  So let's continue onward in that spirit, okay? Yay!

1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days?
2. What energizes you for a really good workout session?
3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned?
4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day?

And how about some non workout/diet questions?
5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list?
6. What's your favorite TV show?
7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing)
8. Where did you meet your FI or H?

Ready, go!

  • 1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days?
Depends on the weather (if it's nice out, I look forward to a run) and how much energy I have.  I think my lower body lifting days may be my favorite/

    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session?
An awesome playlist. It seriously makes all the difference for me.

    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned?
    Heart rate monitor.

    4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day?
Hah, well I played softball all my life and through college, so my athletic accomplishments all relate to that.  Now that I've gotten into running, I hope to run a half-marathon one day.

    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list?
My bucket list is basically all travel-related or Beatle-related.

    6. What's your favorite TV show?
    See my sig :)

    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing)
    I work in medical publishing.

    8. Where did you meet your FI or H?
God, this makes us sound so juvenile, but we were set up as dates for junior prom (we went to different high schools).

    Great idea!
    1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days?  --  I really enjoy both, but I'd say I enjoy cardio a bit more.

    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session?  --  I wouldn't say anything in particular energizes me.  I sit at a desk all day at work (plus nearly an hour commute to and from work), so I welcome the chance to get up and move!

    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned?  --  I
currently have a mini elliptical, but I would LOVE a real elliptical.  Once we have a place with more space, I am buying one!

    4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day?  --  I'm going to go WAY back to the good old high school days.  My senior year, I became the record holder for goals scored during the regular season in field hockey.  I also used to be able to run a 7 minute mile back then.  I'm lucky if I can run a 10 minute mile now.

    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list?  --  So many things are on my bucket list, but the one that's been on it the longest is to see a baseball game at every Major League ballpark.  So far, I've been to 10.

    6. What's your favorite TV show?  --  It was American Horror Story.  Also love The Walking Dead.  Guilty pleasure = Bethenny Ever After.

    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing)  --  I'd rather not get into details, but I work with licensed sports products.

    8. Where did you meet your FI or H?  --  At work (at my previous job).

  • Jude - That's probably one of the sweetest ways I've heard of anyone meeting!  And what exactly does a Beatle-related bucket list item entail?
I really want a HRM, too, but mainly out of curiosity.  I feel like I'd stop using it once I knew about where I was hitting.

lls- That's awesome about the high school record!
I used to work in MLB, and just sat next to a guy on a plane who works in sales for Spalding.  We both swapped stories about how the industry was much less glamorous than we thought going in, but I hope your case is a bit better!

  • 1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days?
Cardio by far.  I feel more accomplished

    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session?
My workout/running mixes.  The music in them really puts me in a mood to "do work."

    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned?
That Garmin watch thingy.  We were just talking about it at lunch!  I'm waiting to see if I start to break into the high miler runs and then I might consider it more.

    4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day?
Recently I would say it was running the road race last summer and learning how to navigate around 11K runners.  That was ridiculous.  Most of my greatest/most fun moments were at any point on the lacrosse field.  I want to run at least a HM some day (this might happen soon if I start training)

And how about some non workout/diet questions?
    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list?
I don't know, there's a lot of things I want to do at some point.

    6. What's your favorite TV show?
I don't watch that much TV unfortunately.

    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing)
    Cancer research.

    8. Where did you meet your FI or H?
We met at college.  A friend of his went down towards the dorms when he heard the fire alarms going off.  He introduced himself and we all hung out a lot and FI caught my eye from the start.  He was so cute and quiet.

    Cardio, no doubt.

    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session?
    Good weather

    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned?
A new pair of running shoes.

    4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day?
I had some pretty great swimming times at one point. I'm also pretty proud of my first 10K time. I hope to run a half-marathon this October.

And how about some non workout/diet questions?
    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list?
Go to Malta. My mom's family is from there. It's a beautiful island.

    6. What's your favorite TV show?
    Jeopardy

    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing)
When I'm working full-time I am a music (and history) teacher. Right now I am subbing.

    8. Where did you meet your FI or H?
Hmm the best way to explain it is that our families have been friends a very long time. My FIL's have been my dentists my whole life. Me and my family are really close to FI's aunt/uncle/cousins too. He and his family were visiting their family up at the island that we all have cottages on. I gave him a ride to his Uncle's cottage.
It's just weird that we both have known each other's families our whole lives but for whatever reason we didn't meet until then.

Ah, I remember those days (except at one point 90% of the office did leave for the WS, but the rest of us got to stay home.)

lbarr - Another great meeting story!  I'm pretty jealous that you don't watch that much TV, as FI and I could really afford to stay away from it a bit more.  What else do you do in your down time?
Work must be really rewarding, do you ever deal directly with patients or are you more in a lab setting?

acap - Malta sounds wonderful . It wasn't on my bucketlist, but maybe it should be...
We watch Jeopardy a lot, too, but can't watch WOF after because FI always gets the clues in about 45 seconds.

  • 1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days?
     - Cardio days.  I feel like I am on top of the world and have tons of energy when done.

    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session?
     - Music and nice days.  Now that I think of it I really need to look for new music.

    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned?
    - A good headband.  I can not find one that stays in place while running and I hate sweat running down my face.

    4. Greatest athletic feat to date? Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day?
     - I used to be really good at softball and enjoyed it.  Over the last six months I have really gotten into running and found that I enjoy it.  I am thinking about running my first 5K easter weekend.

And how about some non workout/diet questions?
    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list?
    - Snorkeling in the great barrier reefs.

    6. What's your favorite TV show?
    - Don't have TV, but ocassionally will watch an episode of Bones on Netfilx.

    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing)
    - Full time accounting manager at a publishing company and a part time visual manager at the Gap nights/weekends.

    8. Where did you meet your FI or H?
    - FI and I went to the same school all our lives.  We have been best friends since HS.  We both liked each other then secretly, but we didn't end up dating until after high school and have been together for 10 years since.

I tried a few brands with no success and have just used bobby pins since.  I have seen a few with elastic grips within the headband that I've been curious about, but am too cheap to test.

  • HeyJude - If you love the beatles that much you would absolutely love London/Liverpool.  I traveled to that area when I was in middle school with my mom for one of her best friends wedding.  The wax mueseum was awesome, I remember going to Abbey Road, and visiting the place where the opening scene of the Hard Days night was filmed. Granted I went a long time ago but those are the things that I remember the most.  It was a blast!

    1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days?
I'm into CrossFit right now, which I think counts as weights. I also like running though.

    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session?
Working out first thing in the morning. If I wait until later, I feel tired and sluggish and don't feel like working out.

    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned?
I'm over gadgets (I've used HR monitors, power meters (on bicycles), GPS's) - a stopwatch is all I need for running. It would be nice to have a full weights set (barbell, bouncer weight plates), but I don't have anywhere to use them.

    4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day?
Not sure if it's my greatest feat, but I did just blow my old 10k PR completely away - I ran a 49:24 this past Sunday. The only realistic goal I have is to someday (like 20 years from now) complete an Ironman triathlon.

And how about some non workout/diet questions?
    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list?
I'm too young for a bucket list! In August I'll get to check off a big one though, which is to travel outside of the US (honeymoon in Europe!).

    6. What's your favorite TV show?
Doctor Who - it's seriously the best show ever.

    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing)
I work for a software company.

    8. Where did you meet your FI or H?
We met in college my freshman year (6 years ago today).
  • 1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days?
Depends (sucky answer, i know), usually I'd say weights, but I do love me some spinning.

    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session?
Thinking about the long term consequences of not working out, and how good I feel afterwards

    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned?
    Dream: spin bike
Short-term: one of those podometers that also tracks your activity.

    4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day?
To date: my PR for squatting
    One day: triathalon

    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list?
Waayyy too many, but the pithiest: travel & explore the world

    6. What's your favorite TV show?
30 Rock and The Rachel Maddow Show

    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing)
I'm currently in research at UPenn. I studied art & art history in undergrad.

    8. Where did you meet your FI or H?
FI and I met on OKcupid while we both lived in NYC.

  • 1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days?]
Cardio usually.  I've always been a runner :)
    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session?
Knowing that if I don't show up my running buddy/workout partner/class instructor will ask me where I was next time I see them.  Accountability is huge!
    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned?
GPS watch that tracks time & distance.  I know it's not impossible to get one, but I'm cheap & procrastinate badly and have not bothered to get one yet :/
    4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day?
I finished a marathon.  One day, I will beat my time on another marathon.  No time soon, though!

And how about some non workout/diet questions?
    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list?
Get married!!!  Hahaaaa, um, I dunno... more traveling for sure.
    6. What's your favorite TV show?
    Days of Our Lives
    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing)
    I work in pediatric endocrinology
    8. Where did you meet your FI or H?
At a rugby game.  He was the super cute one with a mohawk <ahhhh SWOON>

Great idea for a thread... now I'll go back & read some of the previous answers :)
  • 1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days?
Probably cardio... I just started running a couple of weeks ago, so I am all into that right not
    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session?
        Beautiful weather
    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned?
        GPS watch
    4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day?
I don't really have any athletic feats unfortunately.  I was a thoroughly average athlete in highschool.... But I would like to do a triathon, I run my first 5k in May, so baby steps until I am there...
And how about some non workout/diet questions?
    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list?
Lots of travel and experience related
    6. What's your favorite TV show?
I don't really watch too much tv besides MSNBC, but I do like Criminal Minds
    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing)
        I work in sports medicine
    8. Where did you meet your FI or H?
High school, i thought he was kind of an ass... he dated a few of my friends first, but then there was a bet on when we would get together that apparently both of us knew about... I'm sure happy I helped my friends win, but I never did get my 20 bucks...

  • I love this thread!! Thanks for starting it lobsters :)

    1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days? Spin!! Spin is my favorite my far and I really don't like cardio that much!
    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session? My best days are when I really don't want to get up and go. When I don't want to go I put my work out clothes on and walk around the house doing stuff until I figure ok, you're dressed, do it. I usually end up pushing my hardest on those days.
    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned? Heart rate monitor. I got a cheap-o one from my Dad from Christmas buuuut it has never worked. The good ones are so expensive though.
    4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day? Truthfully, just being able to make it through an hour and a half work out. I have never really worked out before. And the times I have tried I have given up because it was "too hard." I know compared to everyone else's answer that is sort of lame. I think it would be cool to become a spin instructor at some point. I have really grown to like spin and think that would be a cool part time gig.

And how about some non workout/diet questions?
    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list? Go some place exotic. I've never been outside the US, aside from Canada.
    6. What's your favorite TV show? Currently, it's Mad Men. I'm totally obsessed with Mad Men.
    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing) I work for a telecommunications company. It's complicated to explain what I do. I work with our executives and our legal department to sort out major customer complaints that could possibly go to litigation.
    8. Where did you meet your FI or H? Work! I have worked here for 7 years but we didn't start dating until after he left the company for a new position. We kind of started talking again randomly over instant message and he met me out on my birthday and then the rest was history!

  • maribeth- I certainly don't think your greatest accomplishment of working out for an hour & a half is lame at all!  Until I started doing half marathons, the longest I'd ever really worked out was an hour.  You're a BEAST in my opinion if you can force yourself to get up early and go to a spin class when you know the instructor will have awful "music" playing.  That my dear, is an amazing athletic accomplishment :)

  • Hi Ladies!

I've been lurking on this message board since I started my "getting in shape journey."  It's fun to learn more about the people you see posting:)

    1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days?

It depends on WHAT weights or cardio I'm doing.  I love kickboxing but I hate running.  I love doing weights with legs but not with arms.  I guess I'm a mix.

    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session?

I think about how much time is left before my wedding!  I also think about the compliments I've received so far.  It really seems to be working when other people are noticing your hard work is paying off!

    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned?
I don't have yoga mat!!!  I would love one, especially because I still do girl push-ups.

    4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day?
I am able to do 5 regular push-ups now.  I'm trying to be able to do more but I have NEVER been able to do a regular one!  I would love to accomplish a pull-up and/or a chin-up without a chair.

And how about some non workout/diet questions?
    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list?
    Travel to Italy

    6. What's your favorite TV show?
    GLEE or Modern Family

    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing)
    3rd grade teacher

    8. Where did you meet your FI or H?
Wild Wing Cafe through mutual friends

  • Ah! So many posts from when I left work to when I got home.  Time to catch up quickly before feeding the dog.

JW- Congrats on the new PR! That's awesome
Where in Europe are you going?

Jaridds- Hey, you're not too far from me!  Do you have a regular bike to take through Pilly?

Medic- That's really great that you have so many people to keep you accountable.  No wonder you were able to do the marathon...And I'm a little jealous of how you met your guy

Isee-Criminal Minds freaks me out.  I can't sleep after I watch it.

Mari-Wohoo for spinning!  Oh, good, I can ask you about Mad Men.  FI and I sort of want to check it out, but do we really need to go back and start from the beginning?

    1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days?
I like them both for different reasons--cardio makes me feel like I really accomplished something whereas I like to do weight training because I can see definition. That makes me feel accomplished, too.
    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session?
Girl Talk! Seriously, I love him. Just listening to his music takes my brain elsewhere.
    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned?
    HRM/FitBit
    4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day?
When I ran cross country in high school (fresh/soph years--injured a lot, so I never finished a full season), I ran 3.1 miles in 21 minutes and 26 seconds. For some reason, I still remember that. Lately, it's been being able to run 20 minutes straight (barely 2 miles!!!). I would like to try a triathalon. I love to swim.
    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list?
Get FI to go to Europe with me. He's never been, and hates long plane rides, but I think he would love it and he'd get to meet all of my friends.
    6. What's your favorite TV show?
I love anything on the Food Network especially Chopped and Worst Cooks in America. Also love Game of Thrones. Can't wait until Sunday!!
    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing)
I teach high school. My courses this year inlcude 11th grade American literature, year long intro to journalism, semester intro to journalism, and advanced magazine journalism.
    8. Where did you meet your FI or H?
We met at a 4th of July party through mutual friends. As we were getting to know each other, we realized that we had been crossing paths for almost 10 years. I guess we weren't meant to meet until the time was right.

  • Okay, dog fed. I guess I should take a spin at answering these, too.

    1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days? I actually love weight days.  My knee hasn't been able to do squats for years and now that it's back to somewhat functioning, I love being able to push myself.  I am starting to enjoy cardio a bit more than I used to, though.

    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session? When I'm in a good mood.  It's weird but I need to already be happy to have my best workout, and I tend to skip the gym when I'm angry or not in the best mood.

    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned? Heart rate monitor and some new shoes.

    4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day? I finally just pushed myself to run a 5k on the treadmill, and did it.  I'm contemplating a 60 mile bike ride later this summer, then maybe the city-to-shore ride or pan-mass ride next year.

And how about some non workout/diet questions?
    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list? Visit Africa, go tornado chasing, go shark diving (in a cage), and go sky diving.  I have a coworker who's actually trying to organize a sky diving event right now, and I'm really, really hoping it works out as planned.

    6. What's your favorite TV show? My week revolves around Biggest Loser.  FI and I also love Chopped.

    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study? (if you feel like sharing) I work for a global beautycare company, in logistics. Some days I feel like I work in Barbie's Malibu playhouse- thank goodness I'm in transportation and not marketing.

    8. Where did you meet your FI or H? At a Phillies game!

  • lizzie - Chopped! Yes! Oh, and I forgot about Worst Cooks - that show is hilarious.  Where abouts are your friends in Europe?

  • Lobsters--Chopped All Stars starts soon! I love when the snarky judges get the tables turned on them. Seeing them sweat is the best.

I lived in St. Andrews, Scotland, for a year, so I have friends in the UK and some have moved to the continent, specifically France and Germany. FI is a WWII buff and I think he would really enjoy Europe; however, his resistance to flying long distances is a problem. He's not thrilled about having to be on a plane to Jamaica for 3 hours for our HM!

<div>That's awesome!  FI actually looked into proposing at a Phillies game the day before my birthday this past summer!  He ended up deciding against it since I'm a Yankees fan.  I wouldn't have minded, honestly.  Although his actual proposal was perfect.</div>

  • 1. Do you more enjoy weight days or cardio days?
I enjoy both for different reasons, mostly just for the variety of it. I guess when I have to choose between the two I will generally choose to do cardio though (mostly for the calorie burn).

    2. What energizes you for a really good workout session?
Great music is essential. If a song comes on that doesn't have the right beat I have to skip it for something more upbeat to keep me in the workout mood.

    3. Workout gadget or item you wish you owned?
I'd really like to get a FitBit. I'm insanely curious to find out how many calories I actually burn in a day versus the gestimate on MyFitnessPal.

    4. Greatest athletic feat to date?  Greatest one you hope to accomplish one day?
I'm sort of a slow and steady person and haven't competed in much of anything athletic-wise in my life. When I was younger my softball team got 1st place, but I don't really count that. My overall goal is to just be in better shape...no crazy big goals.

    5. What's one thing (or more) that you have on your bucket list?
I really want to travel out of the country WITH my FI. I've been to New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, England, Scotland and France and he hasn't left North America ever. We actually haven't ever really taken a vacation together and it's something I'd really like to do SOON.

    6. What's your favorite TV show?
Of all time? Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I was so in love with that show in high school and I still appreciate it now. At the moment I'm really into Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Supernatural, 30 Rock, Castle, Bones and some others, but I will always love me some Buffy.

    7. What type of work do you do, or what do you study?
I'm a graphic designer for the corporate headquarters of a large retailer. I work in the advertising department and am responsible for doing all kinds of design stuff (including but not limited to in store signage, direct mail pieces, animations, web page designs etc.). Love my job :) (except for sitting on my butt all day - that I could do without)

    8. Where did you meet your FI or H?
We met in high school. My best friend and I were the only two girls in a computer networking class, so it was pretty easy to stand out amongst all the boys. FI hit on my in class and we dated BRIEFLY in high school, kept in touch for years and then randomly picked up where we left off years later.

  • Lizzie - that's awesome.  Just give him a little tylonel pm and throw him in the seat ;)

lls - awesome. I'm a Sox fan, go figure.

entropic-Sounds like our FIs have a bit in common.  Our honeymoon will be his first trip outside the States, minus Canada.
