SA Wednesday

Anyone reading any good books?

I'm about a third of the way through 11-22-63, the Stephen King novel about time traveling to stop the JFK assassination.
Ever since I got my Kindle for Christmas I have been reading SO much more. And I love it.

  • No good books for me. I wish I still had time to read like I used to. : To those that did a mac m cheese bar did you do it as an app or part of the main meal?

  • I just started book 3 of the Song of Ice and Fire series (the series Game of Thrones is based on).  It's really hooked me in.

Amy, the only time I've seen it, it was an app.  I would be willing to bet some people would eat mac n' cheese as their entree, if given the opportunity, though.  Lots of people said they did that with the risotto at my wedding.

Would appreciate prayers, ladies.  My little sister (24, so not so little, but whatevs) was admitted to the hospital yesterday with a headache and a fever of 103.  They ran tests and found out her WBC count is incredibly low.  They don't really know what the problem is.

Yes, but I think I'm at a slow part. That book is looooong. A couple of chapters ago I couldn't put it down. I'm sure it will pick back up. I've heard so many great things.
  • professor- praying for your sister. i hope they figure out what's wrong soon

angelsong - i'd totally eat mac and cheese as a meal

Yes please give book suggestions! I finally have time to read again.
  • Ts & Ps for your sister Amanda. Have they checked for meningitis? Happened to me my senior year of high school (low WBC, high fever, passed out). Luckily she is surrounded by those who can help!

Surprised FI with "wedding month" dinner last night. Felt kind of silly, but with everything going on, I wanted to make sure he is still excited about everything. We went to one of our favorite sushi places and I called ahead to have them bring out a cake after dinner with the number of days left until our wedding written on it. Now what to do today for 24? Hmmm.

Ditto on the books- I wish I had time to read like I used to. Maybe after the wedding. Totally unrelated to Stephen King, but I have been wanting to pick up Jenny Lawson's book (writer of the Bloggess blog). Her stuff is totally out there but gives me a good chuckle.

She's negative for meningitis, thankfully.  I think that was one of the first things they checked for.  She's a resident mentor at the Arkansas School of Math and Science, so she lives in a dorm with 150 high schoolers, so high risk, I'd imagine.  She's positive for mono, but they don't think that's what dropped her WBC and they can't seem to make her headache go away.  She metabolizes any sedative they give her and even woke up in surgery (I'm not sure what they were doing surgery for).

We made sure to go out on a nice date the week of our wedding.  It was a nice change of pace to all the craziness of wedding fever and moving madness.
  • While there's a lot I do miss about an office environment, I appreciate being able to work from home, especially given all the construction. Today, I am extra thankful. While this little puppy is cute, sweet, etc, I'm tired all the time. But today, I slept in until 9:00. I don't even sleep that late on weekends. So today, I am thankful for that! Carrie, I just finished 50 Shaes of Grey...interesting book, butngood. I'll definitely finish the series. And on of my favorite authors is Jen Lancaster. She's not a fiction write, but more memoir style, and she's freaking hilarious! Her new book just came out yesterday. Amanda, lots of T's & P's coming your way... Anegelsong, our mac and cheese bar was part of the main course, as our carb. Aeliza, I think that's a great idea! H and I made sure throughout the wedding planning process to make sure we had days or dates where we weren't allowed to talk wedding stuff. And that last month, once a week we were doing dinner to get away from it all!

EEEEK I love her! Her book that I preordered was waiting for me yesterdy at home! I went to her first 2 book signings in Dallas, but missed the last 2 due to CPA exams and brother's wedding. But she will be here May 11 and I'm going with my cousin!
  • Kylie, I LOOOOOVE Jen Lancaster! I am still one book #2 of Hunger Games. My goal this weekend is to relax and read a bit of that. After I get through the rilogy, I am moving on to the 50 Shades series.

Amanda, T&Ps to your sister & family.

Kathleen, I am so glad to see your posts came back. Holy Cow, Batman!

I just finished this book! There were some parts that did drag for me (him living on Mercedes St., in particular), but loved it overall. We got a Nook tablet on Black Friday, and I have read a lot more as a result too. I am now starting the Fifty Shades of Grey series (11/22/63 was my break from trilogies, Hunger Games being what I started with) which so far is a step down in terms of writing style. Stephen King just has a way with elevating the story and bringing it to a whole different dimension, whereas 'Fifty' seems like it was written by a middle schooler (while still entertaining). I recently also read Stephen King's short story Mile 81, which was pretty good--and cheap.

professor -- prayers for a swift recovery and diagnosis!

I've read Game of Thrones books and loved them, also Hunger Games. My surprise favorite book of the year has been "Rules of Civility" by Amor Towels.

Also, really recommend the early Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire books (True Blood) by Charlaine Harris--they are in paperback and very easy reads. They are even funnier than the TV series! It's been a while sense I've read them, but I always recommend.

Next on my list: "The Dud Avocado" by Elaine Dundy and "Walk the Blue Fields" by Claire Keegan

Also, does anybody have a B&N NOOK. Would love to to start the Lending Program with somebody to save money!!!
  • Carrie, I have never been to one of her book signings, but have always thought about going. Are they worth it? Wendi, do you have the 50 Shades book? If bot, you're welcome to mine! Coutski, totally agree on the writing in 50!!!
  • Kylie - YES. They are SO great. She reads an excerpt from the book, and she is just a natural comedienne. Then she answers questions from the crowd. And she talks EXACTLY like she writes. It's so great. And then everyone gets a number based on what time you got to the store and she starts signing books, but since you have a number you don't have to wait in line and you can browse the store, or for me, find a little chair and start reading her book until it's time for her to sign your book.
And then if you're me you get really nervous and try to make a lame joke and then she kind of makes fun of you for being nervous but since it's Jen Freaking Lancaster you take her sarcasm as a total compliment and then she takes a picture with you and you cherish it forever.

Also if anyone has a Kindle I would LOVE to start sharing!

Nope, you're not quite there yet. But George in Jodie is precious--by far my favorite storyline of the book. Those pages will fly by!

Jen-I have a Nook and would love to share! I'll PM you my email address.

Amanda--T&P's to you!! I hope they find what is causing the headaches. I am so glad to hear that it isn't meningitis--our niece had spinal meningitis 4 years ago (before I met J) and had to have emergency brain surgery. The entire thing presented like a cold and was diagnosed as sinus congestion until she woke up one morning and couldn't move her legs.
  • On the mac n cheese thing, we wouldn't have it as an entree -- maybe just as a side.  It wouldn't be anything that needed to be staffed or anything like that -- just some noodles, maybe 2 different sauces, and a few add-ins.  Buuuut I'm seeing that Reflections charges $15.95/pp for a simple pasta bar (like a red sauce and alfredo) and a few little add-ins (no meat).  Holy crap.  Can I just make the pasta and bring it?!

I just ate a bag of peanuts from my flight on Southwest last month when I went to see FI.  Holy sodium overdose.

  • Sister update: Doctor says all signs point to tick-borne illness, except she doesn't know when she would have been bitten and she doesn't have the rash that is associated with most tick-borne illnesses.  I asked my mom the name of what they think it is and she said the doctor didn't tell her.  They're going to release her tomorrow or the next day if her WBC count goes back up.

Oh my goodness y'all.  A friend of ours just had a baby, and she and her husband seem to just sit around the house all day (she's still on leave, he's in grad school) and write on each other's facebook walls.  It is so obnoxious.

ETA: Like, the wife just posted to the husband's wall, "This is what it means when the baby does __________________."
