Getting in Shape

losing weight without FI losing too

I started doing the whole diet and exercise thing about six months ago and have been very pleased with the weight I've lost.  However, FI has lost about 8 lbs along the way as well, and he was already at a very healthy weight.  Now he is skirting the edge of underweight!  I still have about 10 lbs left to lose, but FI ought to gain at least 10-15 in order to be at a reasonable weight for him.  Since discovering his weight loss a few months ago, we've tried having him just eat more than me-- eg, he gets twice as much rice as I do with the shrimp scampi, and we divide his leftovers into halves or thirds, while I divide mine into quarters.  But he has still lost weight!

Has anyone else had this problem?  If so, what have you done?  At this point, I'm just telling him to go out and buy a box of cookies every week and hide them from me, but that is hardly a healthy way for him to gain back the weight he lost!

Re: losing weight without FI losing too

  • Have him do P90X. He'll gain the type of weight you like to see - muscle. :)
  • Does he like nuts?  Avocados?  Peanut butter?  I'd sugggest that he have a couple snacks each day of high nutrient (but healthy) foods like nuts, avocado (or add avocado to his salads when you have them) or a pb sandwich mid afternoon.  Extra calories for him, but not you.  GL!

  • Does he work out?  If so, what is his work out regimen like?  He doesn't seem to be a person that needs to do much cardio.  Lifting would be good for him..heavy lifting.  Also, he needs to eat some protein and carbs.  For example, I am 5'1, 120lbs & I eat 6 egg whites in the morning....just for breakfast!  So, as a male, he should probably be eating double that depending on his weight, etc.  Make sure he is filling up throughout the day, he obviously has a high metabolism, but he needs to be eating the appropriate foods to maintain a healthy balance.

My FI had a similar problem when we were training for a race...he was losing weight even if he ate junk food and what not & even when we weren't training, he could just lose weight like it was his job, but he has now moved to eating healthy & lifting 5 days a week & holy crap....the changes!!!!  Its amazing!!!  We were actually comparing pictures of him from March 2010 to yesterday....the muscle mass he has gained is incredible & its because he has increased his protein intake, along with eating healthier foods throughout the day & getting the the gym 5 days/wk!

Hope that helps....(I feel like my brain is all over the place this morning so I hope it makes sense)!

  • Thanks for the suggestions!  We'll definitely try the nuts, avocados, etc-- he quite enjoys all of those things.  As for his exercise regimen, neither of us do much beyond taking the dog for a run every day (30-45 minutes).  I'll suggest he try doing weights, but I suspect he'd not exactly be interested.  Maybe I can use the idea of him carrying me over the threshold as an incentive.
