Getting in Shape

VENT: That cake is taunting me...

So I made FI a cake to take to work for a CInco de Mayo potluck. Silly accountants are sooooo specific about everything, but they didn't sort out who was bringing what ahead of time. I figured making a dessert would be a safe bet, since it isn't the easiest Maxican food to make. Bonus: I would get all of my baking urges out, without eating a bunch of extra calories.

I found a recipe for a chocolate flan cake and got to work last night (potluck was today). It turned out gorgeous, and looked absolutely delicious! I told FI the only restriction was that that cake did not, under any circumstances, return to this house...guess what he just came home with?!?! Over 1/2 of the stupid thing. I was so good all week, and just had a tiny slice. Waita start off the weekend.....

Oh well, at least I know my baking skills are still intact...might be making some black bean brownies tomorrow to quell the chocolate monster I have certainly awoken!

Re: VENT: That cake is taunting me...

  • Don't beat yourself up over a piece of cake :)  i enjoyed a cupcake and a few cocktails tonight, and I'm choosing to be okay with that...I ate well all week, and exercised a lot.  It is not a reward by any means but sometimes we are allowed to do those things.  And tomorrow morning I will hit the gym again :)

  • Something that I've learned while working in Japan that I find really helps when on a diet - take it into work on Monday!  Cut it up into bite size pieces and put it on a plate with napkins next to it in a busy area at the office.  It'll be gone by lunch and won't sit around your house tempting you anymore ;)

And I agree with PP, you baked the thing, you deserve to taste it!  But definitely get it out of the house...
  • Thanks ladies, as I re-read my post it sounds a little more dramatic than necessary!

I got 90% of it out of the house by giving it to one of my close guy friends who is in a fraternity - it won't last long there! I was mostly stressing over it  because I live in a college town and while FI and I have graduated, it is graduation weekend which means lots of parties. No worries though, had my small piece, was good at the first grad party last night and I will just do my best to keep my little celebratory rewards in check all weekend :)
  • I would not eat it. I don't like flan so I would not have a problem. Good Luck

  • Super glad you mentioned black bean brownies.  I had to go look up a recipe and try it.  AMAZING!  FI didn't even know they were made out of beans!! Shhhhh.
  • Aren't they awesome?!?! I've found that I can even substitute greek yogurt and applesauce for part of the oil and egg without compromising taste - I actually prefer them to normal brownies now! They're even better after they sit for 24 hours, they start out a little cakey and get fudgier after a bit, which I prefer :)
  • You're stronger than I am - I probably would have had a "healthy" slice and then felt rather guilty about it. :-P Anyway. . .congrats on getting it out of the house! And I'm going to have to look into these black bean brownies. Thanks for the tip on that!

  • I'm not sure what black bean browines you are making but my friend recently made the EASIEST ones in the whole world:

1 Box of Low fat brownie mix
    1 can of black beans

Puree the black beans in the blender until smooth (I drain a little water off the top, otherwise dump the whole can in).  Mix the puree in with the DRY brownie mix and That is It!

Bake those babies and yum.  I don't know how it works but you cannot tell at all and they have a fab cakey consistency.  Even my FI is addicted. :)
