Getting in Shape

how to get rid of stomach...

So I started my lifestyle change the day after chirstmas. I've done pretty good lost 23 lbs so I shouldn't complain. I've lost about 2-3 inches on my stomach, and I can tell its flatter. My problem is when I sit. I have a low "fat roll" that shows when I sit. Is there anything specific I can do to rid it. I have been exercising a good but until I got sick. (stomach bug then sinus infection) I am starting back my running routine monday. Will the cardio help eventually get rid of that, besides crunches is there anything else out there to help!??!?!

Cardio and weights will help, but so will good posture and a healthy diet. Pay attention to how you sit and you may find that the 'roll' looks much less significant.

• Congrats on your 23 pounds! That is awesome!

For belly fat I think diet plays a huge role in this. Eat lots and lots of fruits and vegetables to get natural fiber, and eat healthy fats like nuts, avacado, use olive oil to cook with, etc. That is what has worked in my experience!

• Congratulations on the great weight loss!

There is no such thing as spot reducing. You can do great ab moves to build muscle, but it won't be burning the fat off at the same time.
In my experience, my flat tummy is purely based on my diet. I do a ton of cardio each week and a few days of strength training, but nothing flattens it out like a kick-butt, clean eating diet. Make sure you drink a lot of water (I am a bit of a camel and drink way more than I probably should >_< ) like PP said, get in those natural fiber and fatty foods.
If you haven't changed your diet plan to a more healthful one, now is that time!

I've read that when you sit, your stomach muscles contract and that's where the roll comes from. I think no matter how much weight you lose that happens. If that's the only time you have a fat roll, count yourself lucky and just sit up straighter.

Also, 23 pounds since Christmas is awesome!

This.

Unfortunately, the ony real way to lose belly fat is lose fat all over. So keep doing what you're doing and it will flatten out.

There's always going to be a little bit of a roll when you sit, though, because of the skin bunching over on itself. I have almost no tummy fat (my butt and thighs are another story altogether lol) and I still get little creases when I'm sitting.
• I have this same problem. I'm losing weight and toning up but I've always had a rather big tummy for my frame. I've gotten a lot of conflicting advice about it over the years. I now have a personal trainer who tells me great posture, "clean eating", cardio and lots of water is the way to go. I think she's right. When I do my exercises with her she makes sure I'm sucking in my stomach properly and using my abs to really do the work to help. I'm also going to bring my yoga ball into the office, and sit on that instead of my chair during the day. I've done this before and, while it isn't a subsitute for a workout, it does wonders in helping you remember to sit up straight and practice good posture. You can even sneak some crunches in throughout the day while sitting on it. :)

Good luck! With perserverance I think we'll get there!

• I think most of the girls here already hit on this, but yes, Reducing the amount of calories you are taking in, even when eating healthy, most people overestimate the amount of calories they are actually eating.

If you go ahead and track your diet for a few days, you might find that you are in fact consuming more than you thought. So while a clean diet is great, it needs to be in check, calorically. With the right combo, you'll start losing fat, and unfortunately, the belly is one of the last places you lose it. Think about it, you lose fat from the periphery, inward. Your body fat is usually lower as you move away from the trunk area and out towards the extremities.

So it does take time and hard work. no real substitute, but keep on track and you'll get there!

All the best,

Greg
• Ab Ripper X. Ouch...but it works! Not bad for 15 minutes of your day!

• so I lost 60-70lbs and am starting to think that my "belly flab" may actually be extra skin :( I'm guessing not much you can do to get rid of that besides a tummy tuck (and I dont have any plans of doing that lol)?
Sucks because I always had this goal of being able to wear a bikini. I'm totally happy with my weight loss and where I'm at and not actively trying to lose weight anymore.

I'm so excited that I will be able to feel great about myself in my dress and in wedding photos.

Just wish I could wear a bikini on the honeymoon after working so hard to lose the weight :)

Greg, you are SO right! I started Weight Watchers in January and realized how much I was eating. I always ate "right" but just way too much of it. Many of us consume much more calories than we realize. Thanks for the great advice.
