Getting in Shape

weird suggestion - would this be safe?

so this is kinda getting in shape-relatedish... i need my hair to grow. i already take vitamins and eat a decent amount of protein and healthy stuff, but a friend of mine suggested using pre-natal vitamins for their amazing nail and hair-growth magic. anyone know if that's safe to do if you're not pregnant?

Re: weird suggestion - would this be safe?

  • Totally safe. My doctor told me it would be fine for me to take those for hair & nails too! :)
  • I've heard that, and by PCP approved it.  As soon as I am done with my current bottle of multivitamins, I am switching.

(I might have to hide the bottle from FI so he doesn't freak out, LOL)

From what I've heard, they don't really make things grow faster, just nicer.  I think someone here has had experience with that...

And FWIW, why grow out your hair for your wedding?  Don't you want to look like you?  Just my $0.02.

I posted an article a few weeks ago about how getting too much folic acid has been linked to an increased risk for cancer. Here it is again:

    http://www.prevention.com/health/nutrition/healthy-eating-tips/is-your-breakfast-giving-you-cancer/article/7518212f04527210VgnVCM10000030281eac____

    And another article about it:

A lot of the research on manufactured vitamins lately has been finding that they're not as great as we once thought they were. If you're eating a healthy diet, you shouldn't need any kind of vitamin supplementation. And if you're taking a multivitamin, you're already getting 100% DV of folic acid. Along with a prenatal vitamin you'd be getting 2-3x the recommended daily value. The upper limits are there for a reason, and contrary to popular belief, megadosing on vitamins does not provide any extra benefit just getting the recommended dosage doesn't.

  • thanks for the input ladies - my hair does tend to grow pretty quickly, but i used be an "experimenter" (with a mom and best friend who are both hairstylists, who wouldn't be? lol) and i would color/chemically treat my hair at the drop of a hat, so it's damaged. i may try the biotin to help strengthen it while it grows out.

cac - i've read something like that too, about how vitamins are mostly fillers nowadays. what is with this country and our sabatoged diets?!

raynes - i'm trying to hurry up re-growth from a poorly-thought-out cut! when i cut my hair this last time (about 4 inches), our date was still set for next november... and i thought i'd love my new cut. i don't! haha and now we've moved the date up, and i'm a little concerned because said hairdresser mom has sweet updo abilities. :]

To me, growing your hair out to have an "updo" just for your wedding (when you normally have short-ish hair) is weird.  But maybe that's because I stuck with my "normal" hair.

True, it may be harder to find inspiration pics for shorter hair, but if that's what is "you" then I say you want to be "you" on your wedding.

My bios have my hair in them!

I can understand growing our a less than loved chop though.  I'm currently trying to work around growing out some bangs.

  • your wedding hairdo was great! blonde chicks always look awesome with shorter hair - you can see the cut a lot better. :]

i agree about the wedding-specific hair-growing... i cut mine (i should add that it was pretty long, as was always the case) to look more "professional," but it's actually just more work.  right now it's almost shoulder-length, and i miss the rest of it. *sigh*

I use Aveda products on my hair (especially the weekly conditioner for damaged hair - damage remedy treatment) and I think they work great. Also, don't wash your hair everyday - the shampoo strips out the good oil if you overwash.

  • grrrace -- good guess! i use moroccan oil everyday! i have curly hair that i beat the hell out of with straightening, and it definitely helps keep the ends from splitting - miracle!

mery - i know, i know, i commit like all of the cardinal sins of keeping hair healthy but i cannot go without showering because my hair is so fine... any oil on it, and i look like a total greaseball. especially after i work out, i'm drenched in sweat, and that's an everyday event! i wish i could go without it - it'd save me so much time! :]

  • I switched to pre-natal vitamins a few weeks ago when my multi-vitamin ran out.  My hair fees a little nicer.  I don't think it's growing a whole lot faster though?

I originally switched, because I wanted the extra iron.
  • The extra iron in the prenatal vitamins is great! Especially since I have been anemic in the past. The prenatal is what the doctor recommended for anemia. My hair has gotten bad since I moved so I just started up on the prenatals again. I hope my hair improves because this humidity is killing my hair.
