Getting in Shape

Do you take vitamins?

I think I should start taking them...
Any tips? What do you take?

Re: Do you take vitamins?

  • Why do you think you should start taking them?  If you eat a pretty balanced diet, you're probably getting much of what you need.  It's always better to get that stuff from food than from a pill.

But, with that said, I'm on a women's multi, fish and flax oil, and a cranberry pill, all on  the advice of doctors.

I don't.  My boss (oncologist) said that if you eat a balanced diet then you should get all of your daily requirements through that.  Now, if you don't eat red meat, or have other dietary restrictions I probably would take a supplement.  The most I ever take is Vitamin C whenever I feel sickness coming on.

ETA: I agree with J&K... consult your doc!
  • I do take vitamins. I consulted my doc and took his advice! I recommend you do the same!

  • I went to a weight loss counselor, and was told that anyone dieting should be taking a multivitamin, and fish oil, at the very least. Anything you can do to make your body function better is going to help if perform more effeciently, which means you will lose more weight.
I always notice that I have more energy, my skin looks better, and I have less cravings when I take all my vitamins.
I take them every morning and evening...
Morning- Multivitamin, L-lysine, Zinc, Multi-B, St. John's Wort, Vitamin C, and Vitamin D.

Evening- Mulitvitamin, L-lysine, Melatonin, and Fish oil caspules. (Fish oil is better to take at night, so you don't get that taste in your mouth while it's digesting.)

As a side note, thanks to the genetic engineering of our foods, and the lack of crop rotatation by the agri industry, unless you are buying mostly locally grown, organic food, and grass fed meat, you aren't going to get everything you need from a balanced diet. The supermarket varieties of fruits and vegetables have considerably less vitamins and minerals in them than they did even 20 years ago...they just aren't allowed to stay on the vine long enough to fully mature, so they miss getting those minerals from the soil. The grocery variety of meat has much more fat in it than grass fed. It never hurts to give your body a helping hand.

</div><div>This is all and well for you but OP should see a healthcare professional before doing this.  Contrary to popular belief there haven't been that many studies on the benefits of vitamins.  However, there has always been a big marketing push, etc.  Some newer studies have shown that sometimes they can increase the incidence of certain ailments (cancer being one of them).  I know everyone says everything causes cancer but seriously, check with your doctor first.  </div><div>
</div><div>Not to go all "holier than thou" but I am in the field of cancer research and cancer and nutrion is starting to be a big field.  They haven't had much good to say about certain types of supplementation.  Also, seeing how drug companies, etc. do business when it comes to all of these things, its' really hard to believe anyone in the industry.  </div><div>
</div><div>Ok, so please visit a Dr. before doing this.  They would be best to reccommend how much of what, etc. so you aren't taking too much which could lead to problems.

  • No matter how much you eat we usally do not get enough of our essential vitamins. I recommend taking them as long as Dr says it is ok. Lots of great brands and not expensive.
  • Every doctor I have talked to says to take a multivitamin everyday, especially when trying to loose weight, this is actually the first I have ever heard people say they were told they did not have to take a multivitamin.

Personally I would talk to you doctor about it, he will tell you yes or no and what type. I take a gummy multi-vitamin every day because they are the only ones that I can take without getting sick after.
  • LOSE weight.  Not loose.

Anyway, I won't get into whether or not you get enough vitamins and minerals through food (I really do get most of mine) if you try, but have you ever heard the phrase "too much of a good thing"?  Well, most vitamins/minerals are water soluble, so if you have too much, you just pee them out.  Some are not, and can build up to toxic levels in the body and cause tons of issues.

And that is exactly why my doctor has me taking individual vitamins (Niacin, Fish oil, Calcium)  Because a generic multi-vitamin can actually be harmful to some people.

A doctor should always be consulted when making major health changes.  just because you don't need a prescription, doesn't make it safe.

Exactly! You should be getting your vitamins from the food you eat, but talk to your doctor if you think you may not be getting all your vitamins...actually just talk to her in general before going on vitamins/chaning up your diet. A lot of people assume that more is better, but depending on the person that can lead to some nasty complications. Also, our bodies are complicated and don't process/break down supplemented vitamins in the same way as if they were introduced into the body with food. It all depends on the specific vitamin in question.

  • I don't but should

  • I take Alive! Whole Food Multi. Unless you have lots of mula, and buy all organic and free roam farm raised and fresh foods, it's quite difficult to get everything you need by diet alone, although making changes like adding fresh spinach to your sandwiches, or adding sunflower seeds to your salads can help.

The recommendation is 3 a day, but I take 2, since I do get a decent amount from my moderate diet. It also makes it last longer. I can definitely tell a difference if I take the vitamin as opposed to not taking it. Not a placebo effect, it really alters how I just basically feel during the course of the day.

    Here's a link to where I buy it. http://www.swansonvitamins.com/NW655/ItemDetail
Swanson has amazing deals. I recommend getting any other supplements and care products through them. I get my whitening toothpaste and shampoo with them at low prices, it's awesome!

  • I take a multi, Vitamin D, and a Vitamin B Complex high in B12. All of these are recommended by my doctor based on results from blood tests.

Some vitamins can inhibit the absorption of some medications (I think B6 does this). So make sure to time your vitamins so they don't interact with any other prescriptions, like daily antihistamine pills, BC pills, etc. A pharmacist can help figure out what to take when.

Also, if you decide to take calcium, be aware that there are many kinds. The most common one, which is in a lot of those "calcium chocolate chews" etc. upsets my tummy. Many of my friends have the same problem. Ask your pharmacist about the different kinds.
