Salad dressing suggestions?

So Im about 6 months out from the big day and am looking at starting to make little changes in my diet to add to my workout regime.

As a vegetarian, I LOVE to eat salads full of veggies, beans, soy chicken, hard boiled eggs, anything! But I have major attachments to my favorite full fat creamy dressings.  Does anyone  have any suggestions for full flavor dressings that are a lot healthier? Someone of my favorite salad styles are- ceaser, cobb, southwestern, greek, etc.

i need something more than balsamic vinager!

Re: Salad dressing suggestions?

  • I really like the Bolthouse Farms Yogurt dressings. They have a lot of varieties including ranch and blue cheese. They are tasty but not full of weirdo fillers like regular FF or low fat creamy dressings. I can find them at Hannaford in the produce area and I'd assume they are in other stores as well!

  • I use low cal versions of my favorites, but take half of what I normally use and mix it with plain balsamic before pouring.  It makes the dressing go twice as far with far less calories.

  • To get a creamier consistency, I often mix in a whole grain seed mustard in with lemon juice, olive oil & a touch of salt. It gives it a more creamy texture and coats the leaves more. Plus, I like the crunchiness of it :)
  • I really like Marzetti salad dressings - we bought the low cal ceasar and we have the full fat/cal one and we mix just a little bit of the full fat/cal one into the lower calorie one to give it an extra bit of flavor without adding too much bad back in.

We tried Bolthouse Farms yogurt dressing...it's...interesting. I think I need to try to get used to it or try mixing like above.

  • I like the Kraft low fat house Italian.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • My favorite is the Lowfat Balsamic Vinegarette that McDonalds offers. It's a Newman's Own brand I think. Very very tasty!!!!
  • My favorite salad is a spinach salad with green onion, nuts, and whatever fruit is in season (right now, sliced apples and pears), and this is the dressing I use:

    1/3 cup red wine vinegar
1/3 cup canola oil (olive oil is overpowering in this dressing)
    1 1/2 tsp dry mustard
2 tsp sugar or sugar substitute (truvia is my favorite - one packet will do)
    salt and pepper

I'm not a salad eater but I literally ate this salad every day for a few months. I love it.

Another good option is to blend up some of your favorite herbs with some olive oil and lemon juice - it can really pack in a lot of flavor.

  • Newman's Own dressings are all really full of favor.

Try mixing some Mrs. Dash (I like the Lemon Pepper Dash) with some Greek Yogurt. It's pretty low fat, and full of protein, so you stay full longer. I put mine in a separate container and put a little on my fork before I pick up a bite of salad. that way my salad doesn't get lost in clumps of yogurt.  You can do the same thing with hummus. That's a good idea with regular dressing too though, you eat less that way.

You can also try adding strongly flavored fruits or veggies to your salad instead. I love to put a roasted garlic in my salad - don't do this before a meeting though, not good for the breath. You can also use mandarin oranges or blueberries.

I happen to love the flavor of sesame oil and a little of that goes a long way. Tahini is good as well if you prefer something with some substance.
