Getting in Shape

Gym VS. At Home

I am thinking about joining a gym up the road from my house but with money a little tight, and only having 4 hours a night with my daughter and fiance it's hard to jump right in.  I need to lose weight like crazy, not just for the wedding but do a complete lifestyle change.  I already eat very well so I just need to add in the exercise now.

What is your ladies preference, gym or at home exercising and why?  I have zumba dvds and 30DS but feel like I need something that lasts a little longer than that, and walking in the Oregon rain isn't going to work.

I personally prefer to go to the gym. I have done pliates and yoga on DVDs but I get bored of them after while. I think there is something about the energy in the gym with a room full of ppl trying to get in shape that pumps me up when I work out.

I also do weights in the gym that is why I have a membership and do cardio there when it is too cold outside. I also luv running outside. It really depends what the gym has that you would be willing to pay a  membership for. it has to cater to you not the other way around.

I know a lot of people say they are pressed for time but you can always shorten your workouts for 30 min a day and spread them out through out the week. It is your diet that matters. If you eat too much, you can exercise all you want but you won't lose the weight. Right now I spend about 30 - 45 min twice a week in the gym and I run outside for 45 min 3 x a week.

btw if you have a lunch break from work you can work out then or you can go first thing in the morning before you head out to work if that is possible
  • I've got a treadmill at home, which I love because it's my time to read magazines and listen to my CDs in peace.  I use it for about 45 minutes 3-4 times a week normally, but not so much lately because I've been ridiculously busy and can't find the motivation to exercise at 9:00 pm.

I used to go to a gym faithfully until I met FI and we moved in together.  It was an all-women gym with tons of space and every machine.  There was no track or pool, but I didn't need them anyway.  I went for 60-90 minutes 5 days a week, usually spending at least half my time on cardio, and I lost 10 pounds in a month with no changes to my eating habits.  The reason it worked so well for me is because I made it part of my routine - no excuses.  When I moved away and that routine changed, I gave it up because there weren't any other gyms like it around my new house (Curves doesn't count).

Gyms are great if you can work them into your schedule because you can focus only on yourself while you're there, and the time flies by and everything is in one place.  Granted, it's hard to find time during the day with a family to be with, and even 30 minutes on your own is a luxury.  If you do decide to go the gym route, keep in mind that this is your "me time" and we all need some of that.
  • Thanks for the posts ladies. I am leaning toward getting the membership. I gained a lot of weight after my daughter was born, which is funny because I lost during my pregnancy. I need to get where I feel good about myself again.  I would love to have a treadmill at home but our house is tiny so we can't go that route until we buy a house.  The gym would be perfect me time!!! I never get any me time but could fit a trip up there every night after my daughter is asleep (probably 9ish).
  • I used to have a gym at the place I worked. I'd go at lunch all the time. Since leaving that place, I haven't gone to another gym. I do take dance classes though. Even though I could dance at home, I get more out of going to a class/place to do it.

Paying for a gym is motivation to keep going. We have a full gym in our basement, and I don't use, but FI does. Since starting the P90X, I've been using it more and more but if it wasn't for FI doing it with me, there's no way I'd be down there.
  • I do a mix of both. Sometimes I just get incredibly bored going to the gym day after day, so I do one of my fun, upbeat exercise DVDs or play DDR, Michael Jackson's The Experience or Just Dance on my Wii for an hour.

It's good to switch it up every once in a while, otherwise you'll for sure get bored and not wanna do it.

  • I have a heard time with the gym so I've been successfully working out at home.  I just use DVDs and the wii (and soon xbox360 kinect).  It really depends on what works for you.
