Advice for my husband (not eating enough)

A few days ago H asked for help in committing to losing weight. I'm so proud of him. I want him to track calories with me. We signed him up for LoseIt and it seems like he is not eating enough.

Lately we've been on a run of eating small healthy meals throughout the week and then we eat (and drink) whatever we want on the weekends. Not so healthy. I haven't lost or gained weight, but he's been gaining. He's also been busy and eating more fast food.

So we've been plugging in his meals (not all are very healthy, but we've got to start somewhere) and even with his biscuits and gravy for breakfast, he's usually low. I tell him to eat snacks, but he's not hungry. Today he should be eating 1000 more calories (already eaten breakfast and lunch, but he's so full from lunch, he doesn't think he'll want a snack.) He's probably going to get McDonalds for dinner because he won't have time to eat at home. I'm so focused on low-calorie meals with filling, healthy foods, for myself but it seems that's not enough calories for my H.

Any advice?

  • it's not enough calories generally for a man.

Check out this thread from below:  http://forums.theknot.com/Sites/theknot/Pages/Main.aspx/wedding-boards_getting-shape_frustrated-and-discouragedneed-advicehelp

In it there are lots of great suggestions for healthy snacks that will increase daily calories.

As for him eating crap food, the easiest way to fix this is to start meal planning.  Then you've always got tasty and nutritious meals scheduled and you can even make extras and freeze them so you're only a little microwave time away from a good meal if time is tight.
  • After I posted, I saw that, and all the helpful suggestions. Reading fail on my part. I will try to get him to snack on some of those.

We have been meal planning, but because I was the only one focused on losing weight, the meals have been really tailored for me and my calorie levels. Like today, for lunch we both had red beans and rice with some chicken sausage. It's really healthy and filling. I gave him a bigger portion and he almost couldn't finish it.

He's been eating breakfast at work (in a hospital), and usually he gets biscuits and gravy from the cafeteria. We estimated about 500 calories. I guess I need to get him to eat something smaller but still high in calories so he's not completely full until lunch, and then full until dinner.

My snacks are usually low fat Greek yogurt and fruit. We did buy him some full-fat yogurt this weekend. I think we'll make a bag of trail mix too that he can snack on. Nuts are filling, but I bet he could polish off a cup of that throughout the day.
