i have a question do i buy a smaller size dress in the next few months of my goal weight or should i buy to my size now and alter it ???

i plan on loosing 60 lbs, im getting married june 14th 2014, and i plan on ordering my dress online from a reliable non chinese knock off site..what are your thoughts?

I dont plan on buying the dress tomorrow or anything but i will in the next few months

  • Honestly, I would wait. You are way far enough out that you don't need to worry about your dress ordering for quite a while (I just ordered mine a week ago today and I'm getting married in August - mind you that was a too late, don't go that late lol). In the case that you end up losing a lot more weight than you expected, some dresses can't be taken in more than a couple of sizes (some barely anything, some lots) so make sure that you check that out..

Another thing, losing 60 pounds is totally doable in a year+ (hard work but doable) but you won't know what your body is like necessarily 60 pounds smaller, so I would seriously hold off for a bit. I also worry about this dress online business (at least try some on in stores? You might be doing that anyway?), but that's your decision to make!

  • I was having the same problem... My wedding date is undecided and the FI keeps throwing curve balls my way but I think holding off would be the best bet since you have so long to decide. Maybe Nov or Dec start looking and buy in Jan and work from there!!

    Good luck!!!

thanks for the post i recently gained 60 lbs in the last two years or so so i still have all my skinny clothes and know what i looked like , as for the dress online i finally found it from sears, so they have a pretty good return policy ,but yeah im most likely going to wait
  • I agree.....buy after.  I bought mine early and they can only take it in 3 sizes so I have to have extra fittings spread out over time to make sure I don't get smaller than that size.
  • I would wait! I didn't order my dress until about 6 months before my wedding (not because of losing weight, just because we only had a 6 month engagement). It's way too early anyways. Wait until later this year.
  • Not to be a nay-sayer, but if you for some reason do not lose the expected 60 pounds, it's harder to take out a dress then it is to take it in. Plus, taking in a dress too much could alter the shape and look of the dress. But Im sure you'll look great and your FI will love you in anything you wear!
  • I totally agree, wait to order until you've gotten to (or close to) your goal. Maybe plan to get to your goal 6 months before (that gives you all of this year!) and then order your dress with confidence. :)

[QUOTE]Definitely wait to buy.  The closest I came to going bridezilla had to do with my dress alterations when they couldn't make it small enough without losing structure.  It's a good problem to have, but also very difficult one month before the wedding.  Wait until December or so to order.  And even if you lose a ton of weight between now and then, buy for the size you are when you order, not the size you anticipate being when it arrives. And I second Sarah's concerns about ordering online, especially if you haven't tried on any wedding dresses.  I know you probably have heard this, but the style of dress you think you want and the style of dress you actually buy after trying them on are different.  I though I wanted a halter A-line and swore I'd never get a strapless with a sweetheart neckline or anything mermaid shaped.  Guess what I ended up with?

yes i know how everyone is faux pausing me about buying online but there is 1 bridal salon in my area, i live so far out we just got highspeed internet last year before that it was dial up...the next closest city to me is 5 hours away and i dont have a big buget, the nearest davids bridal is actually 14 hours away, and sadly im on a tight tight budget of 6000$ so i cannot afford to travel nor take the time off work, so i found a dress from sears i like , and i figure if i do like it enough i can alter it into a sweetheart neckline ect, because its under 200$ also they have an amazing return policy so if in the end i dont like it i can return it for a full refund of my money and see where i can go from there, ill cross that bridge wheni get to it

[QUOTE]Just to be clear, sunnilove, I don't caution the online dress buying because I think you'll get screwed over -- from your first post, it sounds like you know how to look for non knock off sites, and you can get some quality dresses online.  I just always recommend brides try on dresses to get a feel for what works and what doesn't.  Wedding dresses are bizarre, and what works in regular dresses doesn't always work in white satin.  So by all means, buy online - but I do recommend going to try on dresses at your little local store just to get a feel for what you like.

This is also what I was intending by my comment... I just think that trying them on gives you a really good idea of what they might look like when you buy online, it would be awful to have the surprise of not really liking it and not having time to get a new one - or missing out on a style that you love even more than your original idea :)

  • I agree with the trying on before you buy, from ANY store. I know I ended up buying one dress and actually exchanging for a COMPLETELY different style. Esp when you are losing weight, (I am too, have already lost 52lbs), you view of yourself changes and you want to show off different areas and accent different things. Take your time. What I thought was my dream dress, did not end up as my actual dress!
